I worked at Planned Parenthood full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The patients are very appreciative of you help.

    Cons

My nursing supervisor played favorites with her nurse practitioners and wrote you up if you were not her "pet." I have been a nurse practitioner for 30 years and have never had negative reviews from any supervisor except at Planned Parenthood. Many nurse practitioners, including myself, were forced to quit because of her prejudices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your nurse practitioners not just the nurse supervisors! Go to the clinics and see your nurses in action and then pass judgement.

I worked at Planned Parenthood full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good schedule flexibility
    Good benefits
    Good co-workers

    Cons

Poorly qualified and trained upper management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure a clinic manager and upper level executivez are properly trained and qualified for the position.....not just promoted because of tenure or who the know.

I worked at Planned Parenthood full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Offers a great service to people from all walks of life with no questions asked. Clinician at the time I was there was the best! Very nice coworkers who all got along with each other.

    Cons

Pay scale not in line with most other healthcare organizations, way too low in certain capacities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need more education for employees more often, maybe monthly inservices on various important topics.

    Pros

Team members who share similar beliefs and values, great hours

    Cons

For me, dealing with the stigma has been the biggest issue. Trying to figure out who I should tell and keeping myself safe is a balance I'm still working on. Also, regular protestors are annoying.

I have been working at Planned Parenthood as an intern

    Pros

    Good place to learn more

    Cons

    Not much room for mobility

Use interns as more of a resource

I have been working at Planned Parenthood full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Doctors and nurses are dedicated and committed, a wonder to watch, the level of care is amazing

    Cons

In a word, management. Empire building to the detriment of the mission. Favoritism is a real problem, allowing some people to set their own agenda. Few projects are followed through to completion

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better communication between departments would be a good start. More realistic time lines for projects and more equitable treatment of employees.

    Pros

Lots of opportunities to help on projects, work independently and good feedback.

    Cons

Because it's a nonprofit salary and pay of course aren't spectacular but that's to be expected.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Incentivize workers to stay longer

    Registered Nurse

    I worked at Planned Parenthood

    Pros

Good first job. Friendly, quirky staff

    Cons

Pay is the lowest for nurses I have ever seen. Ever. So there is a high turnover.
Nurses are basically medication pushers and hand holders. The medical assistants get more responsibility than the nurses.

It totally depends of which affiliate you are working for!

    I worked at Planned Parenthood

    Pros

This is a nationally recognized leader in women's reproductive health care. The mission and vision is clear, and the staff are motivated to do their best - however, each affiliate is separate. This means that under the umbrella of "Planned Parenthood" there are nearly 80 different affiliates with their own board of directors, senior staff, culture, and organizational policies and procedures. I worked for Planned Parenthood of Montana - my review is only based on my experience there.

    Cons

Planned Parenthood of Montana suffers from terrible leadership. It is a "top down" problem - within the Development department there is almost constant staff turnover, due mostly to extreme micromanagement and a hostile work environment. I can't speak for the other departments - Education, Public Affairs, Health Services - but beware of taking a job in Development. You'll be out of there in under a year, as have most of the Development staff under the current Director.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers should receive comprehensive training on standard management and HR best practices. There should be no tolerance for senior staff who create a hostile work environment for those they supervise. Staff retention and quality staff acquisition should be priority goals.
