I have been working at Playworks full-time

    Pros

Playworks has great strategic goals and is working towards implementing the policies that will help get us there. There are always bumps along the way but the leadership at Playworks is focused and talented, and will absolutely continue to grow the organization's footprint.

    Cons

The offices could be more productive if distractions were minimized. The playful atmosphere is fun but sometimes contributes to slow productivity.

I have been working at Playworks full-time

    Pros

    Recess! Core values. Friendly people.

    Cons

Always changing systems. HR understaffed so can't be supportive. Everyone has to fundraise, regardless of role.

I worked at Playworks full-time for less than a year

    Pros

You get paid to play! As a Coach, you come into the school and help foster a positive change in school culture through games and heading recess. The Playworks Coach is the most popular person at school! Pay is decent, especially when you consider that you get paid days off for all school vacations and breaks, except for summer vacation. Believe me, after expending all of that energy on a daily basis, you'll need those days off!

    Cons

After doing all that great work, there's no guarantee you'll have a job with them the next school year. I would have loved to stay on with them, but they brought in a bunch of AmeriCorps members that can be worked more and paid much less.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I believe no company should allow it's best employees to become free agents. Find a way to retain coaches after the end of the school year.

    Pros

Making a difference in childrens' lives.

    Cons

Physically demanding, working outside in heat could be a challenge for some. As long as you take care of yourself by staying hydrated and seeking shade in the summer, you'll do great!

I worked at Playworks full-time for more than a year

    Pros

-Get to play outside all day!
-Get to make a difference in the lives of youth (especially low income youth)
-Provide an outlet for energy for kids during the school day
-Staff meetings are full of games that help you to practice your skills
-Teaching experience in a fun environment
-Placed in a school and get to develop your own program (with resources/requirements provided) so this is a great job for a recent college grad who is considering the teaching profession
-Management is very passionate about the mission and is consistently doing publicity to raise awareness around play for children in schools

    Cons

-LONG hours and oftentimes working 6 days a week
-Amazing support from direct manager, but people above them did not seem to care about most things happening at school sites
-FUN environment, but unprofessional boundaries by some members of management with coaches
-No clear ladder for people who want to stay with and/or advance at Playworks
-For AmeriCorps members, no vacation time (except for school winter and spring breaks), so no ability to take a day off here or there to have a life
-Management tricked people into working more hours than they had to for the year (FREE LABOR) by scaring coaches into thinking they would not make their hours to fill the AmeriCorps agreement. Several people had 100+ extra hours at the end of the year (1700 hour requirement)
-2 year max on AmeriCorps service, so there is no guarantee you will have a job after those two years (they only hire a few coaches beyond AmeriCorps service... CHEAP LABOR)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

While we all know this is an AmeriCorps position, coaches should be supported more at their school sites while they are working 50+ hours a week

I have been working at Playworks

    Pros

Working with kids and serving as a positive role model

    Cons

Little flexibility for a nonprofit position

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensuring that partner schools respect program coordinators.

I have been working at Playworks full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The Playworks program is fantastic and has been proven to improve school climate. The people and culture of Playworks is a step above every other organization that I have worked with.

    Cons

It is in a constant state or growth and expansion which requires A LOT from their employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is ok to maintain current program levels in an effort to build a solid financial base to move forward on.
