I worked at Point Park University full-time

    Pros

PPU offers a comprehensive benefits package.

    Cons

If you are not part of the "click", you are an immediate outsider and treated as one.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be consistent and pay attention and listen to all employees before you make decisions

They don't have a capped salary structure so salaries are often lower compared to similar jobs in higher education.

I have been working at Point Park University full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

With a bean counter for their president, (former CFO/City Treasurer) bottom line & real estate more important than employees.

    Cons

Dropped many important programs that university had gained acclaim & enrollment in the past. Has lost it's true vision and employees are paying the price with lower salaries and no compensation for excellent results. Has retained certain management that are incompetent with no past experience in areas of Student Affairs. Needs to improve salaries to same levels in other similar positions in comparable local higher educational universities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Restructure upper management. Top VPs & Directors overloaded - top heavy vertical hierarchy. Give employees better raises instead of rewarding top management with perks/bonuses.

I worked at Point Park University part-time

    Pros

The people who work for Point Park are mostly wonderful and interacting with the students is usually great.

    Cons

It is very top-down here and it is hard to move up in the ranks.

I have been working at Point Park University full-time

    Pros

Great people to work with. Exciting to watch students learn and grow. Benefits are great and work-life balance is encouraged by management.

    Cons

Low pay compared to other area educational institutions, including those of the same size. Transparency is preached but the rank and file don't buy it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sacrificing your employees well-being (salary) for the sake of growth or building new spaces is wrong. Being an urban University requires salaries to be somewhat competitive with private companies as well as other higher ed institutions.

I have been working at Point Park University full-time

    Pros

A great campus right downtown Pittsburgh that has seen many improvements to the campus within the past few years. People are generally friendly and the benefits here are truly very good. Many adjunct faculty members and some full-time faculty members are beyond qualified to teach, so they bring a very new-age approach to higher education based on experiential learning. Point Park University has the potential to be great! As is, it is fine, but I'm optimistic that it will get better.

    Cons

Poor internal communication, staff voice is non-existent, and there are little hopes for promotion within. Technologically lacking, especially with dated things such as the intranet and Jenzabar, not to mention the infamous WIFI problems.

    Pros

Worked one on one with both students and Professors

    Cons

I wish the position had been permanent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider your top employees for F/T permanent positions.

I have been working at Point Park University full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Talented student body. Very good national reputation. Quickly becoming one of the top dance schools in the country, with many grads working as professional dancers.

    Cons

Very administrator heavy, and becoming more so. Salaries have been frozen for 4 years now, and are significantly below peer institutions. Tuition and fees continue to rise, but not salaries or budgets, so it is hard to feel that either employees or students are a priority.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Salaries need to be addressed. Budgets, especially for dance production, have not changed in over a decade, despite a significant increase in student population.

I have been working at Point Park University full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Plenty of travel money if you work in a department where other faculty do not use theirs.
Downtown campus in major metro area--Pittsburgh repeatedly named most livable US city.
Many faculty do not do anything at all other than teach a few courses--so if you are lazy, you can game the system.

    Cons

    Low salaries.
Provincial, incestuous, nepotistic administration, faculty and staff overall. Many are quite lazy, too. One huge problem is the high percentage of faculty and staff who have never worked at any other university.
    Low academic standards.
Staff do not understand that they carry out the policies of the faculty, not vice versa. In other words, they don't know that the faculty does not work for the clerks, secretaries, administrative assistants, entry-level librarians, admissions counselors, assistant registrars, etc.
