Amazing people, little to no advancement

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Porter Airlines full-time for more than 3 years

ProsMost people who work there are amazing, I have made lifelong friends. That will be the hardest part to leave but at the end of the day if you are looking to further your career, it may not be the best place.

ConsUnless you are a VP, they offer low starting salaries with minimal increases on an annual basis. Promotions are not based on hardwork or loyalty.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more proactive, less reactive in all types of situations.

Overworked, Underpaid

Catering (Current Employee)
Toronto, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Porter Airlines part-time for less than a year

ProsTravel benefits provided you are able to have consecutive days off even as PT but even that is not as great as other airlines given the lack of destinations Porter flies to

Cons(1) No benefits
(2) Extremely underpaid
(3) PT working FT hours with (1)
(4) Only ONE 30min break
(5) The ferry

Advice to Senior ManagementLack of communication between management and employees
Lack of unity amongst different departments
Lack of career advancement
They're trying to improve the people and culture, but have no improvements in the last year

Get experience... and move on

Call Centre Agent (Current Employee)
Toronto, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Porter Airlines part-time for more than a year

Pros- Sharing of information within company members
- Events and offers and family friendly
- Somewhat flexible
- Downtown location, head office same location as airport
- Small company, easy to know others in different department

Cons- low pay, and a long time for promised added benefits and improvements
- policies made hire up that effect passengers, that lower employees have to respond to
- Top down mentality
- constantly changing policies

Advice to Senior ManagementIf possible, be stricter with policies with customers, that's why they're put in place, "exceptions" and "gestures" all the time, don't make sense. Make sense of pricing. It's difficult to appease upset passengers, if it doesn't make sense to us to even explain to passengers.

Poor Management

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Toronto, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Porter Airlines full-time for more than a year

ProsMany great people work for Porter, and it's a wonderful community. The product is great, and something to be proud of.

ConsPorter management is skilled at avoiding responsibility and passing the buck when something falls outside of a defined area or requires interdepartmental cooperation (the co. is very silo-ed). This means that a few people do most of the work, while others skate by – and the harder workers are burning out and leaving the company.

There is a lot of talk and little action – and no one is held accountable when things fall through the cracks. Meanwhile, the 'yes-men' continue getting promoted, while people who try to bring up (and attempt to solve) real problems are perceived as negative and counter-productive, limiting advancement opportunities for skilled staff.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou are cultivating the wrong people! Value employees who bring up the tough issues - solving them will make the company stronger. Pay attention when many good people start walking out the door.

Great people, but extremely underpaid

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Toronto, ON (Canada)

I worked at Porter Airlines full-time for more than 3 years

Pros-Dynamic, young team who work with passion and diligence...excellent growth opportunities

Cons-American style management have made a very hierarchal culture
-Wages are not sufficient with location and experience
-Limited ceiling to all jobs, encouraging turnover

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on rewarding employees with a more progressive pay scale, as no one will take the company seriously without it. Make the employee feel wanted, instead of a disposable option. Remember that experience and re-training will cost you more in the long run than raises.

Great front line staff horrible management.

Call Centre (Former Employee)
Toronto, ON (Canada)

I worked at Porter Airlines full-time for more than a year

ProsDedicated front line staff who make the company look good. Their tag line is "going above and beyond" and sdaly that begins and ends with front line staff.

ConsLow salary, no career advancement, unskilled management and senior management. Extremely high turnover rates and management who refuses to assess why that is happening.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet training!
