Large and slow, like a mammoth

Software Engineer (Former Employee) Lisbon (Portugal)

ProsThis is a very large company and one of the biggest job creators in Portugal, so you have to give them credit for that. If you want a stable job, with an average middle-class salary that pays the bills, then this company is a good candidate. Also a good company to make a career at since they won't fire you easily, once you are in deep, and will let you stay long after you become obsolete, which is good thinking in the long run, since the welfare state will soon be history anyway. You might get good experience by working here, before you get bored.

ConsThis is as corporate as you get (think Dilbert): the bureacracy is infuriating and middle management often has antiquity has its greatest (only) asset. There is a time-warp field surrounding companies like these that makes everything move slower once you step inside.
Overuse of outsourcing leads to status differences between full-employees and contractors and spreads the wealth between a lot of parasitical consultancy companies at the expense of the workforce. This makes rich a lot of people that don't really deserve it by allowing the exploitation of those poor helpless engineers, and should (but likely won't) be somehow regulated or controlled by the state with adequate legislation.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey don't need any advice, since they already do a great job at promoting themselves and the company.

In the middle of the crisis

Project Manager (Current Employee) Lisbon (Portugal)

    ProsThe job security, the people

ConsNo career prospects and poor pay. Due to the actual crisis and lack of competition, there is no pressure to raise salaries

Advice to Senior ManagementMore attention to human capital, since there are no progressions in sight.

    Stable environment

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Lisbon (Portugal)

ProsJob Security and leading market positions, diversity of protfolio, international presence
    Reduced pressure from clients
    Recognizable brand
Good work environment with informal relation

ConsLack of opportunities for growth due to a mature market, Company politics and alliances and
Career systems based on personnal attributes which makes it harder for an unknown to go through the ranks. lack of integration with international business and lack of visibility of oportunites outside

Advice to Senior Management10 years without visible investment on human resources is a long time for a company who wants to succeed. When facing such a strong menace like the ones we are living corporations need an environment that promotes change and risk taking, not authoritarian management and cost focus

Just fine - (regarding an engineering position, other areas such as HR are much more relaxed).

Trainee - IT & Telecom Engineer (Former Employee)

ProsThe prestige of working on one of the largest companies in Portugal.
Good for your resume. Salaries are not all that bad.

ConsIf you are a worker outside Lisbon, you get treated like a second-rate employee (even if you're in Aveiro).
    Should pay their engineers better.

Advice to Senior ManagementRead the "Cons" and improve on those.
PT-Inovação should have a more start-up feel to it, too much micro management.
A little more credit could be given to the "subcontratados" category.

Great start, superb trainee program but difficult progress

Systems Analyst (Former Employee) Lisbon (Portugal)

ProsOne of the biggest portuguese companies woriking in Portugal
Offers great sense of security to its workers
One of the main employers in Portugal
    Biggest telco in the country
    Good people to work with

ConsBig company means many levels in the hierarchy
Even though it's a strong company, it's not paying the best salaries
No career development plans at the time I left

Advice to Senior ManagementMostly their work is very good, managing to remain atop on a complicated market situation and still creating new opportunities.
However, some of the company's tallent is being put to waste with a difficult development of career.

    ProsLarge Company, strong leadership!
Overall a good place to work but if you want to reach top places be sure your properly connected!

ConsIt's like a large oil tanker! If you want to change direction you must do it plenty of time ahead!
Highly concorrential market with tendency to revenue and market share decrease.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest outside Portugal, make PT grow! Don't spend it all in shareholder dividends and aditional revenues. Grow or get swallowed!
