I have been working at Pratt & Whitney Canada

    Pros

Great colleagues, company pays for college, safe job and safe work environment. Get to work on beautiful aircraft and turbine engines. Literally on my feet all day, which is a whole heck of a lot better than being parked on my can behind a desk throughout the workday.

    Cons

Low compensation. The company is very focused on applying lean manufacturing practices in operational environments that are not optimal for their application. Any efficiency gains or gains in productivity are not met with reward for employees -- causing diluted incentive and a work environment where employees feel they can do just the bare minimum in order to earn a relatively small paycheck.

    Advice to Management

Better compensation and incentive packages. Attach rewards to gains in productivity in order in create more incentive in employees. Open up the shop environments to technology that would streamline work and decrease frustrating wait times.

Nice globally respected company with too much back room dealing

Former Employee - Low Level Manager in Bridgeport, WV

I worked at Pratt & Whitney Canada

    Pros

The hours were pretty good (at least for us in management) and my boss was always sympathetic if I needed time off. Benefits and educational package were very good and you work with a very intelligent group of people.

    Cons

I call it back room dealing. Despite an advanced degree and outstanding performance reviews I was constantly passed over for jobs by employees with no degree but who were "friends" with the boss. Upper management makes constant changes that really make no business sense (I know what I'm talking about......I own a successful business now). Pay was okay but not great for this industry (especially working with multi-million dollar corporate jets). Our plant almost unionized over these things.

    Advice to Management

If you pay the employees $18 an hour, leave them alone to do their job and they know what to expect, they will be happy. If you pay them $25 an hour, constantly change around the shop, constantly change when the shifts will be and promote people who kiss rear but don't have the skills............they will unionize.

    No opinion of CEO
    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

    - Everyone in the office is very smart and helpful - They allow people to move around departments a lot and can learn several different things

    Cons

    - Not clear plan for interns they hire. Boring work is usually given to the interns without any real training. - Decisions are made very slowly

    Advice to Management

    - Have a reason to hire engineering interns before hiring them. Having them sit around at a desk with no work is a waste of time and money for everyone involved.

    Pros

Ample room to grow, industry is challenging and rewarding, relatively good pay and interesting work

    Cons

Slow bureaucracy, things can take forever to get done. Too many channels to go through but I guess that's aerospace!

    Advice to Management

Give better work life balance to employees, especially in production!
