I worked at Pratt & Whitney as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Pratt is a great place for an internship. All the employees are knowledgeable, willing to help, and works to give interns valuable projects they will learn from.

    Cons

Pratt is a very big company, and it is very easy to feel lost in the sea of people working on one engine. Especially design engineers are very specialized, and will spend most of their time working on very specific tasks. There is not a lot of variety to the work.

    Advice to Management

Management does a great job working with each employee to figure out their strengths and weaknesses, and to help them progress to the positions they would be interested in. Keep that up.

    Cons

Management focuses on how hard you work and does not favor more productive employees, unless they are also work the longest hours.

    Advice to Management

Promote the most efficient employees, rather than those that live at work.

    Pros

Interesting work that is not found elsewhere. High tech products and processes. You can challenge yourself. Many different opportunities can be found.

    Cons

Big company, lots of policies and procedures. Benefits are not very good these days. Not much more to say on that.

    Advice to Management

Nah they would not listen, even if it made sense.

I have been working at Pratt & Whitney full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent learning atmosphere and very prestigious career. Work scope can vary by day and people are generally helpful and easy to work with on tasks. I have also found that some of their benefits, particularly the education program, is top notch. Easy to work with and lots of opportunity.

    Cons

Given the varying work scope the expectation of work completion can be unreasonable. There are not nearly enough in-house employees to complete high priority tasks and fix the botched jobs of outsourcing. Additionally, it seems to be a trend and one that is extremely important to many that the pay is not sufficient for the demanded work. I love what I do but with inflation, furloughs, layoffs, and very small raise pools there is high likeliness that talent will seek other more fruitful careers.

    Advice to Management

Workplace comfort and sense of pride about the facilities is desperately needed. The lack of compensation should be addressed but given the belt tightening making the workplace a place an employee wants to go or enjoys while there should be a top priority.

I have been working at Pratt & Whitney full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits are ok. Coworkers are mostly good. First level managers do a good job supporting their employees. Time off and flexible schedule are very good.

    Cons

Company culture overall isn't great. Ace (utc's attempt at six sigma without using GE's program) is a joke for the most part.

    Advice to Management

Spend money on employees and retaining employees

    Pros

Great people and products. Company will allow high potential employees to take on a lot of responsibility quickly.

    Cons

HR has too many guidelines in place to allow for recognition or appropriate progression of top non-executive talent. This leads to frustration and departure of many great employees who are not willing to stay at a pay grade lower than they deserve for several years.

    Advice to Management

Make exceptions for high potential employees are pay them market rate and promote them to the appropriate Pay grade.
