I worked at Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne

    Pros

Plenty of bars nearby for lunch and after work

    Cons

Old boy network, value based on diversity, who you know, feeds at the government trough. Most managers are good at working the system but are clueless as to outside world current practices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire outside and get some fresh blood

I have been working at Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great mentors and workout facility and new employee events were great. Tour of the Cape prior to a shuttle launch was amazing! Also getting to see the equipment I worked on get launched into space was really neat!

    Cons

There are some politics and if you don't have a manager willing to go to bat it can reflect poorly on you when compared with peers in other groups. There is some ageism going on in that young new hires are sometimes looked at as needed training and experience in order to provide value. While that is some times true it is very detrimental to new employee morale.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to provide mentorship programs to new and young employees. Provide them with a clear vision of their growth path within the company.

    Pros

PWR, believed in the work life balance, family was the first priority with the employee.

    Cons

Compensation consideration was slow at times for process improvements.

I worked at Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The compensation, benefits, and other policies were typical of Aerospace companies. The atmosphere was one of a family since many employees had been working there the entire time the Space Shuttle was in use.

    Cons

Challenges are that the Shuttle program is over and the replacement (Constellation) was cancelled by the Obama administration. This caused necessary down-sizing which forced employees to take their talents elsewhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Follow what the President, Jim Maser, established as the mission and vision for the company. Get everyone "pulling the wagon in the same direction". In Maser's words, if you are in the wrong seat on the bus, we will help you find the right seat. If you are on the wrong bus, we can help you with that too.

I worked at Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Some projects were incredibly interesting. Pay was decent.

    Cons

Those interesting projects? Few and far between. Everything else is slow, bureaucratic, and often tedious. As a result, most of the best employees leave for something better. You're left with a lot of mediocrity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to keep your best employees. Get them interesting work and pay them accordingly. It's essential.

    Pros

Ability to learn and work on a very diverse set of duties if you want to.

    Cons

Can get stuck in a position that you can never move up, engineers are egotistical.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize the employees who are multi-taskers making them very diversified and hard working.

I worked at Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Exciting industry to work in with 401K matching and a good vacation/sick bank. Can be slow at times which allows you to relax a bit.

    Cons

Long-time employees lack ambition and have no motivation so all the new/young employees have to do a lot of work yet the long time employees make a lot more in terms of salary. The business is focused too much on process improvement and meetings all day without much progress. The company keeps talking about "change" yet the change never happens. Too many processes and red-tape get in the way of actually getting productive work done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value the young ambitious employees who come in and want to make a difference.

I have been working at Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Sold to Aerojet. Aerojet renamed to Aerojet Rocketdyne. Definitely a Pro, but only time will tell. For now it's the same old story.

    Cons

Pratt & Whitney was a disease like a cancer consuming Rocketdyne's strong heritage. The sale of Rocketdyne division to Aerojet is definitely a blessing, but I think the damage is done. It will be hard to dig out the cancer left behind by Pratt. Hopefully Aerojet will use Rocketdyne for what it was used for many decades ago.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Time be innovative again now that the useless weight (i.e. Pratt & Whitney) is off your back.
