Ok if you want to have the next 30 years of your life wasted!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsStable employment, decent benefits though they no longer give profit sharing unless you are salary. vacation days are better than most companies.

ConsToo much management and too little of them know what they are doing. They are all about numbers, they do not care about your family life, work comes first. There is a lot of favortism and politics. The communication is very poor, they tend to change the rules as it best fits the company and the rules are unclear and not communicated properly.

    Advice to Senior ManagementQuit!

Initially very rewarding, but as the business grew larger, more pressure to sell, sell, sell!

    Territory Manager (Former Employee)

ProsIf you are aggressive and want to move up the ladder, there are plenty of opportunities. Very goal oritented company.

ConsUpper management sees the business as a profit margin company instead of a healthcare provider. They will push employees to work as long as they think you can, A 60 hour work week was the norm, not an oddity.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet back to the basics of the business.

A risk aversion, commodity company with no future insight

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Indianapolis, IN

ProsCompany's somewhat monopoly in gas business; Performing company stock.

ConsSenior management does not have the guts to invest in new technologies. The annual budget for R&D has been pathetic compared to industrial peers. Company only promotes YES men instead of talented people. Due to lack of technolgy projects, company hires many "Productivity Improvement" people who can't really solve any technical problems, but appear to be busy (having meetings) all the time. This is a typical American company that rests on existing monopoly status, waiting for others to erode its market share. This is not the type of enterprise who can lead US out of the recession through constant innovations.

    Too much politics at Praxair

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThere are many good people around you. There are very good technical resources in Tonawanda. The smart people are in Corporate.

ConsThere are some issues with the level of internal promoting. Everything is influenced by a strong culture of office politics.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay attention to what the lower level employees are telling you. They are at the front lines. You are the policy makers. they are the money makers.

    Praxair Review

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsPraxair has decent benefits, the work itself is okay, and for me, the job site was centralized and easy to access.

ConsUnfair and biased performance evaluation reviews, remote managers didn't truly understand your job responsibilities; far too many layoffs, resulting in far too much job stress.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop all of the layoffs. Yes, the economy is bad, but you are cutting far too many valuable employees, which is adversely affecting various turnaround times.

    Praxair pros and cons

    Administrative Assistant IV (Current Employee)
    Tonawanda, NY

    ProsFree parking, cafeteria on site

ConsPeople have worked there forever, they appear to make money in spite of themselves. There is a good ole boys club and no opportunities unless you are in the club

Solid company but does not bring out creativity

    Process Engineer (Former Employee)
    Indianapolis, IN

ProsI appreciate how their stock has perform over the years and made for a nice 401K. Financially they are solid and have long term contracts so even in tough times they have revenue.

ConsYou cannot be too creative since you are most often dealing with hazardous materials and rigid procedures have to be followed. Most of the products are commodities so margins are very thin. As a result employees are constantly encouraged to spend less and less every year so upper management can maintain their high salaries. If eventually you do get a high paycheck, beware you may be laid off to improve the company bottom line.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave a more pleasant office / factories. Locations can be very dreary and industrial. Take some hints from a Google or Pixar.
