A big small company growing into a small big company

I have been working at Precor full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Precor was recently named a finalist for the 'Best Places to work in the Puget Sound' by the Puget Sound Business Journal for a good reason. They are an honest and ethical company that has a company creed it believes in.

I work in the XDC (Experience Development Center) which builds networked fitness solutions. I have been extremely impressed with the quality of worker they hire. A lot of ex-Microsoft, ex-Amazon, etc.

Compensation is competitive and benefits are overall strong. They are self-insured and my premium is substantially less than my former Fortune 100 employer. I receive a base, bonus (based on individual performance not some random Microsoft stack ranking) and profit sharing.

Precor is an American manufacturer who designs and builds their high-end cardio product in Woodinville. That's REALLY COOL. It takes a lot of discipline and process to profitably produce any physical good in the Puget Sound, as we aren't exactly the most business-friendly area.

The employee discounts on other sister brands (i.e. Salomon, Arc'teryx, etc.) are amazing. The employee discount for equipment is also stellar (sold at a loss).

Stability is good. Precor is owned by Amer, a 3B a year fitness portfolio company. It's a stable and relatively flat industry, which feeds into a relatively laid-back culture.

You DO NOT need to be a fitness fanatic to be hired or successful, but it is nonetheless a valued trait. Many people are active, workout often, and eat healthy.

Work-life balance is excellent and most people seem to put in an intense 8 or 9 hours and then turn off the work phone.

    Cons

Facilities are mixed. Most building are fairly average at best, especially when compared to most tech offices. Older cube walls, no cafeteria, not enough meeting rooms, etc.

Amer Sports has a focus on profitability and growth which has constrained investment. Precor has chosen to grow their sales and field presence, which has kept R&D down. This is not a catastrophic situation, but it does feel like there may be under-investment in portions of the business.

Precor seems to be great at promoting from within and growing employees, however there are only so many job openings. As the company grows, the scope of roles will become more specific. You are better suited to grow within role at Precor (rather than grow by switching roles) as a result.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As the company continues to grow, a more suitable office building would be recommended. It's sometimes embarrassing to take customers and prospective employees through our tiny workout spaces and somewhat dates offices. Build a showcase building with a showcase (large) gym.

I have been working at Precor full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - If you are in to health and fitness you get to be part of making great products.
    - Coworkers are great. There is a culture of accountability although it is starting to fade somewhat.
    - Good work / life balance.
    - Fairly small company so you'll get to know everyone and your way around quickly.
    - Manufacturing takes place right there on the main campus which is cool.
    - The work is interesting and challenging.
    - The company is profitable.
    - The CEO is approachable and friendly, hopefully this attitude will set an example for his senior staff. His strategy for the company seems positive. Too soon to tell, but it appears likely he will keep downward pressure on benefits and possibly cut profit sharing.

    Cons

    - Management is very cliquey. If you aren't part of the "in crowd" your input isn't valued.
    - Higher than average stress. Mostly caused by constantly conflicting goals.
    - Deadlines and budgets are extremely serious but resources to accomplish what's needed aren't always available. Tasks needed to complete an assignment are constantly adjusted.
    - The facility is underwhelming, furniture hasn't been replaced in decades.
    - Benefits and compensation are average.
    - Small layoff mid-year was quickly followed by hiring replacements and then additional staff with very similar skills. No real apparent logic there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Invest in some facilities upgrades.
    - Don't be so quick to keep bringing in more "senior leaders" without a plan. You are risking having too many people in charge.
    - Spend some time understanding what your staff is working on, you might find your people are more talented than you realize.

I have been working at Precor full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There are a few things that make Precor a great place to work.

First, the people. Everyone is passionate about changing lives and building the best products in the fitness industry... everything from the latest in mechanical design for cardio and strength to the best software for networked fitness.

Second, the culture. It's a culture of accountability and enablement, where the focus is doing the right thing - even when its not the most popular of decisions.

Third, the benefits. The company provides great health, drug coverage, vision and dental benefits - they also fund the first half of the health coverage deducible for you. While many companies have scaled back on 401K matching, they still match the first 3% then half on the next 3% with no cap on the total match.

Finally, the work-life balance. While it's a global company, it's also a very much 8a - 5p culture... when the day is done, you work doesn't typically follow you home. Or, if you need to work occasional longer hours, Managers are flexible with your schedule to accommodate.

    Cons

As with any company, you'll encounter silos. Fortunately, they're few and far between and they're becoming increasingly rare. Be prepared to proactively reach out and bridge the gaps and help tear the remaining silos down.

I worked at Precor full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I found working at Precor to be full of challenges and opportunities. It was a great place to work for with very good benefits. I worked with a great team of knowledgeable people and that made the job much more enjoyable.

    Cons

Salaries could be higher. Salary increases are predominately 3% yearly with a rare maximum of 5%.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do hiring from within instead of the bringing in people from the outside who are not familiar with the industry.

I worked at Precor full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Precor has some really inspirational people. There are many there that are dedicated to the team concept and it was a pleasure working with them. The benefits are good and the pay is good. The product is of high quality and the leadership team actively pushes everyone to get involved with exercise and health.

    Cons

The leadership team sometimes confuses confidence with great leadership and has allowed a lot of corporate climbers and questionable managers to get into leadership positions and things have suffered greatly. The leadership team is a bit out of touch with the daily operation and over the past several years has rewarded the wrong people for others work. This all has caused a lot of team players to shutdown and "protect what is theirs" which makes for a poor atmosphere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk with your non-management types. Really delve into that survey you give bi-annually and find out why these supposed "performers" get lower survey results. Figure out why things worked in the past, but now do not, and that over reliance on data and surveys just slow down the customer satisfaction process.

I have been working at Precor full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The benefits are fairly good but could be a little more encompassing. There are alot of very intelligent and driven people around me; Most of the people I interact with are friendly and helpful (outside of my team). The company prides itself on being a market leader and it is obvious in the company core values how they have been able to maintain that position over the decades.

    Cons

I never had the feeling that I was a functioning member of my team. The culture of the company is very much in the manufacturing category of the tech industry. My teammates, for the most part, are very immature (both technically and socially). The development process is very slow, almost waterfall-like.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Implement faster development processes and allow the developers to push technological boundaries.

I have been working at Precor full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Exceptional people that love what they do, approachable senior management team members that demonstrate their daily commitment to living fit, very cool industry and this team leads the way in new product developments.

If you love to be active and love to win [in business] you will enjoy working at Precor.

    Cons

Internal poilcies have not kept pace with an otherwise dynamic and exciting company (though you will likely never see them in print). A tendency against sharing information often results in duplicate efforts and work delays to gather multiple levels of approval for even small items.

While individual delays may be immaterial, the persistent attitude may hinder Precor as we continue to expand into fast-paced markets.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be candid with yourselves and your colleagues regarding personal strengths and weaknesses. All will benefit from an honest review of performance.
