A lot of potential, but better communication is needed.

    Pros

    • flexible schedule
    • challenging projects to work on.
    • decent compensation
    • great colleagues
    • supportive bosses

    Cons

    • benefits are not great
    • frequent layoffs make people feel unstable
    • not a lot of top-down communication
    • heavy workload

    Advice to Management

Better communication is needed from upper management to average employees. People feel somewhat like a number. Your employees work very hard, and need to be shown they are appreciated. They need to feel some connection to the company as a whole rather than just their individual team. People feel unstable due to frequent layoffs and as a result are frequently looking for other jobs. The workload is very heavy for current staff. Working more with contractors and freelancers has put additional stress on staff who have to train them and clean up after them when they drop the ball.

    Pros

Decent pay for freelance editorial work

    Cons

Clueless management; precarious financial position. Freelancers - avoid like the plague! The last job I did for them, they took almost 5 months to pay me. Their financial position is precarious at best.

    Advice to Management

Sell the business. You're out of your depth. (Oh, that';s right - you did sell the business!)

    Pros

In the summer there is air conditioning, and there is heat in the winter time. Managers are flexible with time off until they are not.

    Cons

Turnover is crazy. No onboarding, just sink or swim culture. One way or another everybody is training their Indian replacement. Ugly office in brutal facilities.

    Advice to Management

If you're a woman, get out as soon as possible. Glass ceiling much?

    Pros

Telecommuting and flexible schedule. Great colleagues that are easy to work with. Paid dental and vision premiums. Management does not micromanage.

    Cons

Low pay. No formal performance appraisal and review process. No career growth opportunities for U.S.-based employees. Management does not communicate company goals and outlook.

    Advice to Management

Implement a merit-based employee performance appraisal system and financially compensate employees that perform well! Communicate on a regular basis company goals and performance metrics. Bring back 401K matching.

    Pros

Allows work from home, and laissez faire management

    Cons

Horrible benefits, unfriendly staff both on and off site, most managers don't know how to motivate staff, difficult clients, and one of the ugliest office atmospheres ever. There are a few good managers yet many are unsuited for management roles. Upper management seems to have poor judgement.

    Advice to Management

Keep your good people and motivate them to stay. Shed the others who hurt the company's reputation.

    Pros

    Interesting and challenging projects
    helpful colleagues and managers
most authors and personnel at clients are pleasant and professional to work with

    Cons

exceptionally poor planning of project timelines, timelines arecontinually underestimated, sufficient resources are not committed, so inevitably you reach "crunch" time and must put in extraordinary effort to remediate the project and re-map the schedule, while trying at the same time to keep your 14 other projects on track
PMs are always overcommitted, always, and when they advise the manager that there is simply too much to accomplish in too little time, they are told "sorry, just do the best you can." There is no real plan for relief of overload.

    Advice to Management

You are compelled to hire PM talent from without because you have gutted the support staff. PLEASE invest in more entry level people interested in developing into PMs, to support PMs on routine tasks like image logs and general manuscript prep, so that PMs can devote their time to the emergencies that always come up.
