    Pros

Well intentioned and the individual people are great to work with. Really good internal education opportunities if you choose to take advantage of them. Great Lean/KPO office, optimistic about the way things could be better. The new CEO might help push this company forward into real innovative thinking.
Very stable, careers can last for 30+ years here. Great work life balance in most departments. On site massage therapist is excellent! Cafe is solid but nothing special (have the salad or a great soup.) The EAP program is the best kept secret, use them for everything; they are practically a concierge service and seriously under utilized.

    Cons

They are so risk adverse that they, in turn, risk staying an 'old world' company to their own demise. Run by committees of committees it's nearly impossible to find a single decision maker that doesn't have to consult with their colleagues, boss, dotted line report, VP of their org in order to make a decision like "yes let's add this new field to an internal tool." When the Affordable Care Act lit a fire under this company there were some serious and real tries at change, but once the 'danger had passed' the board lapsed back into it's choleric ways.
Worst health insurance I ever had, even on Premera plans provided by other employers. Semi-required health screenings and wellness programs seem invasive and while they may notice that employee health is not good, they don't do much to support changing it other than threatening to raise your rates... ahem... remove your discount. No Gym discount, some healthy food in the cafe, but lots of junk snacks, high co-pay for counseling/mental health support.

    Advice to Management

Do what it takes to get a board that sees beyond today's profits to see the disruptive infiltrators in the industry aimed squarely at the profits of the healthcare world. That disruptive company is already out there, trying new things and unless Premera starts moving now it's going to be blind sided. There is no sense of urgency, help inspire your teams to feel like what they do is important again. Every time you hear the phrase "that's the Premera way," know that is a symptom of despair, not a complete to corporate stability.

    Pros

Good pay, of course you always want to make more. Coworkers are great. A lot of people telecommute.

    Cons

Need more learning opportunities within the company. Need more promotions from within, more daily rewards, team rewards, monthly rewards (incentives) like they used to do.

    Advice to Management

More off campus team building. More incentives.

    Pros

Talented, supportive group of IT professionals that deeply care about their work and maintaining excellence even when supporting outdated, failing infrastructure.

    Cons

    Executive management unsupportive and obstructionary.
Little or no support for upward movement. Even when promotions are earned, it can take 3 - 6 months for HR to implement the change in title and salary.
Daily, subtle threats that IT jobs will be outsourced in the near future.
While Premera speaks of work-life balance, many IT teams are understaffed and overworked by design.

    Advice to Management

Come into the 21st century and think of IT infrastructure as a valuable asset, not a liability that needs to be tolerated.

    Pros

This is an environment that recognizes that life happens outside of your work life. You don't need to answer e-mails in the evening and on weekends to be a player in this company.

Very collaborative environment, the line workers and middle managers look out or one another and work together toward common goals. An easy place to establish a rapport when working cross-functionally.

Employee benefits are top notch. Great medical, dental, 401k etc.

    Cons

Upper management can be very political. Hard to understand your situation until you've been there awhile.

Can be difficult to read the environment. "Are we really risk takers?" " Do you really want to hear the truth?" It is often hard to know where you stand, depending on your situation. Executive management can be fickle.

    Advice to Management

Engage dissenting opinions with less disdain. Empower middle managers to express their views freely, even if you don't intend to follow their lead. Often it is enough just to feel heard!

    Pros

If you are a driver and you want to lead there is opportunity. Work life and home life has a decent balance.

    Cons

Once you decide to lead then you have bureaucracy that will drag and hinder you. Young management that does not understand how to motivate and lead. Progress is slow due to too many projects without good coordination, leadership is lacking, turn over of personnel is high. Technology is behind, tools are fairly up to date.

    Advice to Management

Get a strong middle management that understands how technology should be put together and communicate clearly how that should be done.

    Pros

Premera hires generally smart people who want to provide a valuable insurance service to the public. Most employees do their best and are well-meaning.

    Cons

Check your sense of humor and reality at the door. This place thrives on political-correctness and refuses to deal with issues directly and without spinning the problem to hide the root cause problems.

    Advice to Management

Try being realistic and working through problems instead of covering your backsides.
