I worked at Premera Blue Cross full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Benefits, work/life balance - if you're in a good department, it can be an awesome place. But it goes both ways.

    Cons

Resistance to change, red-tape, hard to move around internally

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote from within - there are a lot of good people that work here amongst those who are too stuck in a rut.

I have been working at Premera Blue Cross full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Compensation is okay. Free parking. 401 K matching.

    Cons

This place is a fraternity culture. If you are a white guy and you ski, you are golden! Administrative support are treated like interchangeable drones, and after-thoughts (if actually thought of at all). It reminds me of a modern-day Mad Men without the sexual overtures. Awful. There's absolutely no recognition for individual potential, and hourly employees are treated like children. It has zero feeling of innovation, and is so steeped in political culture it's oppressive. The systems are old and there's a long drawn-out process for everything.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Care about those that support you. Discuss and support their goals, and don't be denigrating.

I worked at Premera Blue Cross full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Good company and professional envirornment. Decent benefits, and culture is good but very stiff, not a lot of flexibility but that can be good. People in other departments really enjoy their jobs at Premera, however, there are issues within the department that I work in.

    Cons

Leadership on my team (not all teams) is very poor. The coordinator is running the department, not the manager. No direction and no support to do my job properly. A lack of understanding and experience in management to control the team.

I have been working at Premera Blue Cross full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    * Peers in marketing are smart, supportive
    * Industry leader with stability
    * No hassle accommodation for disabilities
    * Health insurance coverage is good, as you might expect

    Cons

    * Middle and upper management frequently at war with each other, casualties mount quickly; which makes it difficult to understand direction or maintain motivation.
    * Like many other places, stated goal is to innovate and be creative, but truth is that anything new or creative is quickly squelched.
    * Silos are thick and impermeable.
    * If you live anywhere but northern suburbs, commute is going to get tiresome. Metro buses stop 2 miles south, Sounder stops 2 miles west, no shuttles.

    Pros

steady work, good work-life balance, really good people, Christmas gift was always a little weird but I appreciated them, smart/ambitious people can move ahead quickly with efforts to increase visibility

    Cons

mercurial atmosphere in some depts., slow pace, high-turnover in some areas, regulatory, environment can make things complicated/confusing, so many meetings, parking was a challenge

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve employee communications in order to help quell stresses about changes in healthcare marketplace.

I have been working at Premera Blue Cross

    Pros

Most people in the company are very nice. Campus is beautiful, their culture and values seem to be in line with what you would expect from a health insurance company.

    Cons

Management is very poor and unorganized. It is making the shift in U.S. healthcare very hard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate better with each other and associates beneath you.

Overall decent place to work but frustrating

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at Premera Blue Cross

    Pros

Benefits - health insurance, pension, 401k
Telecommuting is encouraged due to lack of space.
Onsite cafeteria is nice as you don't have to leave campus.

    Cons

IT using stone age tools in some areas, very slow to upgrade tools and hardware,
Some management is very frustrating to deal with as they are never present and do not pay attention to what their own staff is doing on an operational basis.
Everything is about getting the annual bonus. If it's not on someone's annual plan, it probably won't happen.
Work/life balance does not exist in some parts of IT. Poor annual planning of initiatives followed by employees giving up vacation time, evenings and weekends.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get input from staff when planning project pipelines. Upgrade servers and tools in a more timely fashion. Choose projects more wisely.
