    Pros

steady work, good work-life balance, really good people, Christmas gift was always a little weird but I appreciated them, smart/ambitious people can move ahead quickly with efforts to increase visibility

    Cons

mercurial atmosphere in some depts., slow pace, high-turnover in some areas, regulatory, environment can make things complicated/confusing, so many meetings, parking was a challenge

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve employee communications in order to help quell stresses about changes in healthcare marketplace.

I have been working at Premera Blue Cross

    Pros

Most people in the company are very nice. Campus is beautiful, their culture and values seem to be in line with what you would expect from a health insurance company.

    Cons

Management is very poor and unorganized. It is making the shift in U.S. healthcare very hard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate better with each other and associates beneath you.

    Pros

Good company and professional envirornment. Decent benefits, and culture is good but very stiff, not a lot of flexibility but that can be good. People in other departments really enjoy their jobs at Premera, however, there are issues within the department that I work in.

    Cons

Leadership on my team (not all teams) is very poor. The coordinator is running the department, not the manager. No direction and no support to do my job properly. A lack of understanding and experience in management to control the team.

  5.

Overall decent place to work but frustrating

I have been working at Premera Blue Cross

    Pros

Benefits - health insurance, pension, 401k
Telecommuting is encouraged due to lack of space.
Onsite cafeteria is nice as you don't have to leave campus.

    Cons

IT using stone age tools in some areas, very slow to upgrade tools and hardware,
Some management is very frustrating to deal with as they are never present and do not pay attention to what their own staff is doing on an operational basis.
Everything is about getting the annual bonus. If it's not on someone's annual plan, it probably won't happen.
Work/life balance does not exist in some parts of IT. Poor annual planning of initiatives followed by employees giving up vacation time, evenings and weekends.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get input from staff when planning project pipelines. Upgrade servers and tools in a more timely fashion. Choose projects more wisely.

    Pros

Work life balance seriously valued, agile transformation in progress across IT, great people almost no jerks, lean working has taken hold, app development in house

    Cons

Committee think heavy, process heavy, bureaucracy heavy, not cutting edge in IT, sales and market still forgets there is a website rather than using it as a tool.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some non-doctors on the board, they aren't who are buying your services. Understand that on-line is your future not some afterthought. Think about the business you want to have an not just go after every large account. Buy best of breed tools, not who wines & dines you the most.

I have been working at Premera Blue Cross full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Premera offers good work life balance, an easy commute location, decent benefits although they are being reduced every year, and a decent pension plan. The 401k match is average.

    Cons

The pay rates are well below market, there is a large pocket of folks that have been there forever and are unwilling or unaware of how to make change or improvements.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase your pay, get rid of the old guard who don't want to change, and remove the consensus culture.

I have been working at Premera Blue Cross full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The health coverage is probably the only barely decent thing this company can offer it's employees.

    Cons

There are too many to mention in this limited space....giving only a few.

This company cannot afford even a paper cup let alone complimentary tea/coffee. You'll have to purchase everything from the cafeteria. Everything is minimalistic in nature required to squeeze the max out of the line staff.

The entire management spend their entire days in useless meetings while the line staff work their butts off.

There's no work-life balance and little thought is given to such trivialities which does not affect the management anyway.

Procrastination and CYA pervades each and every action by the management who unfailingly micromanage across the board. Ass kissers are preferred over talented hardworking individuals. ( An SVP is a HS graduate ! )

You do not see any senior management in the aisles unless there's an emergency...none of them make any effort to even walk around or talk to staff and get their views.

Not a single person from the management has any idea what is required in today's tech savvy world. Most of them are still dreaming of the "golden days" of mainframe computers and think the web is what you see in a dusty corner of your home. Try explaining issues to such people and getting them to take any decision !!

There's no onsite gym or any meaningful perks offered to employees.

There's zero scope of promotion or even a career with this company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try reading what companies like Google and Amazon are doing to attract and retain talented individuals. But you probably wouldn't understand as you have mindsets from the stone age.

    Pros

Great employee benefits, pay is incredibly high and people get promoted without jobs even posted.

    Cons

Takes 10 years to get advancement, HR is not there to support you and apparently new rules have been put into that place that has turned it into a daycare. No one and I mean no one makes decisions without having 25 meetings. Too much wasted time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get to actually know who is talented in your company and who is a fraud.

    Pros

Telecommuting. Open door policy of manager. Yearly bonus.

    Cons

Parking - its a competition to get a spot. Raises are not significant. Their policies as to what qualifies for a raise has grayed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Implement more team meetings to discuss improvement & change.
