Generally dysfunctional

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsCompetitive salary. Some autonomy afforded on projects. Global business dynamics.

ConsShort sighted strategic focus. Confrontational executives. Old school culture trying to act innovative and modern. Newark (Chicago) office is a dreadful place.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop the public berating and confrontational style. Some positive feedback every once in a while would be helpful.

Find allies within senior leadership to get what you deserve

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Premier Farnell full-time for more than a year

Pros- The opportunity to work on legitimately compelling initiatives
- Developing relationships with top manufacturing firms
- The ability to work from home at least one day per week

Cons- Unreasonable expectations regarding administrative workload
- Unfair distribution of rewards
- Inability to recognize the value of key employees
- Arcane policies such as not giving outstanding employees a top performance review "because nobody is perfect"

Advice to Senior ManagementIndividuals whose contributions to the business are substantial must go around their immediate managers to gain recognition for their efforts. This places an unnecessary burden on high performers by forcing them to shop around the company for allies who will support their career advancement. The same may be said for gaining clearance to pursue important, high-impact projects. I have found it necessary to take ideas which my immediate supervisor failed to approve to other high-ranking individuals throughout the organisation who are capable of recognising a good idea when they hear it.

Owing to the political culture of the company, one must frequently defer to lesser-competent individuals for no other reason than that they possess a relatively higher job title. A better ability to recognize (and reward) talented people instead of forcing them to work for those less-qualified than themselves would go a long way in repairing the damage. Even senior leaders seem ill-prepared to always act in the company's best interest. I have witnessed incidents on several occasions in which senior managers were allowed to behave like ill-disciplined children simply because nobody possessed the courage to call them out for their inappropriate conduct.

A lot of anger here

Analyst (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at Premier Farnell full-time for more than a year

ProsGood salary and benefits package
Good location - right across from the Ravenswood metra train (Chicago location)
Flexible work life balance

ConsLooking for quick fixes rather than solving the problems
Reactive solutions instead of proactive implementation
Manage through intimidation
Doesn't foster a collaborative environment - very hierarchical

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn to lead by inspiration. Everyone is there to be productive and improve the company. Treat employees with the respect they deserve.

Unhealthy obsession on achieving very short term goals

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Premier Farnell

ProsCompany is will to take chances on people and give them opportunities others may not. One can get lots of different experiences working here.

ConsThe company lacks a true identity and still hasn't figured out what it wants to be when it grows up. Sadly everyone in the organization is having to sprint faster and faster only to stay in the same place.

Fixer-Upper

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at Premier Farnell

Pros*fair compenstation
*fair benefits
*good colleagues
*diversity welcomed and appreciated
*emphasis on innovation
*convenient location near public transit and has free parking
*commitment to/focus on the customer is genuine
*development/career opportunities

Cons*everything is a top priority
*top-down/micromanagement
*poor understanding of "global" work methods
*UK centric leadership and policies
*performance based on the bell curve
*unrealistic "targets" result in constant underperformance
*poor technology and facilities infrastructure
*"do more faster with less" mentality impacting morale
*commitments to employees feels like lip service
*lots of politcs - management by fear

Advice to Senior ManagementWhen financial results dictate reducing costs, it also means not everything can get done. We don't need to move "faster" - we need to prioritize and focus. While generating shareholder value is mission #1 for any public company, the employees ARE your company and they deserve better than they're getting.

Great people, bad systems, old facility

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at Premier Farnell

ProsThe people you work with are diverse, friendly, and very supportive. Conveniently located in the city with several public transport options, as well as lots of parking spaces. Management is very communicative and values employee feedback.

ConsCompany's IT systems and tools are ancient and functionally limited. Although employee opinion is valued, staying current w/ technology and systems is low priority. Employee morale is affected by poor work environment - office building is just extremely old and falling apart. Company celebrates success but in a very frugal way - nothing like company-wide outings or anything of that sort.

Advice to Senior ManagementCompany strategies are difficult to implement if day-to-day processes are crippled by outdated systems and technologies. Appreciate employees by paying more competitively, not just with warm emails and cheery company meetings.

Just OK. Could be a much better company with stronger global leadership

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at Premier Farnell

Proscompetitive pay
benefits fairly solid
mostly nice people in the rank and file
some very smart, competent people can be found here
market niche is strong
some nice progress on international expansion

Consprivate competitors continue to outpace in the U.S.
revolving door for regional senior management
flash is often rewarded over substance
customer focus heavy on lip service while key barriers to success in the market linger inexplicably
politics are thick, careful what you say

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement by fear never works in the long run. Global management team needs a healthy dose of self awareness - take a hard look in the mirror to see why the company's performance in the States is sub optimal.
