    Overworked and Underappreciated

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThe upper management really seems to believe in their vision of transforming healthcare, and you feel like your job has an overall contribution to the grand plan.

ConsThere was way too much work and not enough people on the team to do it all. I spent most nights and weekends working in addition to normal working hours and still never felt like I could catch up. There is no appreciation given from middle management. I'd scramble to get a last minute request complete, finish it around 1 am and email it out for review first thing in the morning and there would be zero acknowledgement or thank you.

The priorities were constantly changing. We'd spend weeks/months working on something that was #1 priority and then find out they decided not to do it and all of the work would be shelved.

Office politics were out of control. You're either in the clique or you're not. And the clique is composed entirely of people willing to kiss up and do the extra effort that has nothing to do with the actual job. You can be amazing at your job and have a great relationship with your team (the people you work with every day), but if you don't volunteer for some random committee or teach some fitness class at lunch, or always shoot your hand in the air first when mid/high level managers need something then you're ignored.

The company is all about "Values" and acknowledging co-workers, but it is not followed through with at the lower levels, and certainly not by middle management. Co-workers would take credit for work they didn't do and managers would not acknowledge someone's extra effort or job well done. The only recognition would be at the peer level, and eventually people gave up publicly acknowledging each other because it didn't mean anything if your manager never acknowledged it.

People overall seemed burned out, miserable, and individualistic.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake people feel appreciated for the hard work they do. Your "Values" aren't doing the trick because it isn't practiced at the lower level, and the big company Values Awards once a year are a popularity contest. Care more about people at the individual level on an every day basis. Stop spreading the message that everyone feels overworked and that's the way it is, and instead hire more people to help with the workload.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo improve competitive recruiting: include deferred, tax sheltered compensation as optional payroll benefit; provide off-line expense management tool for later upload for the road-warriors.

Great mission, decent pay, but the talent and hard workers get abused

    Senior Consultant (Current Employee)
    Denver, CO

ProsGood mission and vision to improve healthcare, but the strategy shifts monthly depending on which way the wind blows. Decent growth opportunities if you put in your time.

ConsPoor leadership that doesn't communicate well with employees even in mid-management, much less lower level staff. All departments and new projects are understaffed. Many departments will not let the underperformers or free loaders go and will abuse the talented and hard working employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementDetermine what direction the business is headed in and stick with that direction. Recognize employees that are getting the work done through incentives/advancements and figure out a way to let the free loading employees go.

    Stop the toxic politics

    Employee (Current Employee)
    Charlotte, NC

ProsYou will learn a lot and be paid well with good benefits. The mission and values are good.

ConsWork-life balance and values not seen in action. Upper management sets higher salaried workers up to fail so they can replace them with cheaper workers. HR supports tyrannical managers instead of the workers. If you are not good at brown nosing or BSing, you need not apply and even then be prepared to be burned out after a year. HR and top executives continue to advocate ruthless politics or look the other way.

Advice to Senior ManagementBad Politics -excessively understaffed, management is not supportive or involved enough to go to bat for you. Peer reviews are used in a very poltical environment where others may have ulterior motives for not giving peers the rating they deserve.

Long on Vision, Short on Execution

    IT Manager (Current Employee)
    Charlotte, NC

ProsLeadership is very driven and seeks to innovate at every corner. Benefits are on par or surpass those offered by competitors. Leadership has focused on increasing communication to employees.

ConsVery poor work/life balance. Great visions and ideas are not executed properly and completely before moving on to the next big idea. Constant changes in direction make it hard for employees to stay current. Very little opportunity for growth and advancement in certain areas.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to communicate to employees. Don't neglect core competencies.

    Java Developer (Current Employee)
    Charlotte, NC

ProsYou will learn and adopt a lot of technologies
Colleagues are very talented and they provide a lot of help to newbies
The company is positive and supportive about the needs of employees with families (e.g. generous over giving leave to both parents if they have a new baby, flexible over hours to enable parents to pick up children from school, etc).
    Great Values

ConsI dont have any complaint so far.
