    Not so great

    Account Executive (Former Employee)
    Santa Rosa, CA

ProsAssigned parking space. Some fantastic people. They have a great community influence and I really enjoyed the public forum on the local homeless population.

ConsEmployees are not treated well by management. Consistent downsizing occurring. Work environment is not very positive. Current technologies being used In order entry are ancient.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus more on your employees and less on your personal career goals. Put more attention online and do what's right by your users.

Shortsighted Leadership Manning a Sinking Ship

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsMany of the people are wonderful at this company.

Being paid to work in the news industry.

Helping provide news coverage and advertising to the local community and small businesses of Sonoma County.

ConsProfoundly ignorant and ill-considered decisions from middle/upper management. Sometimes it feels like the people making the calls aren’t smart enough to understand the decisions they are making or how they will impact the company and it’s workers, let alone their bottom line.

Unethical treatment of workers and horrible work-life balance. Many people work through lunches and breaks here, or come in early and stay late (without pay) just to keep up with the ridiculous and unrealistic demands of management.

There is no room for honest discussion about the things that are not working because to do so, would mean risking one’s job and being perceived as “Not a team player.” They are robbing themselves of solutions by creating an environment where workers feel disinvested in the company. These same workers, if given respect, trust, and appreciation would be the source of many solutions.

Irelivant and stodgy content. The writers and advertising staff are capable of so much more, but the culture of the company and management are keeping them locked into this obsolete model of business, that completely fails to connect with modern audiences.

The company culture is very cliquish. Cronyism is a very big thing here.

Broken and obsolete computer systems that will NEVER be upgraded. “Live with it.” Is the message from management. Nevermind the fact that investing in a system that worked would not only make the employees happier and less stressed, it would increase productivity, and make the clients happier as well. Until these things are fixed, clients will always have billing issues. It feels dirty having to lie about the root causes of these problems when you know why they are happening, and know that they will continue to happen in the future.

Advice to Senior ManagementFix the culture of this company. Create TRUST and positive rapport with your workers. Then invest in a better computer system. Get rid of DTI. And stop lying to employees. The very least you can do is be honest. Once those basics are covered, then you can move onto creating relevant content. Try not to pander exclusively to your readers who are over 60. Try to get some readers who are under 60.

    Good people, bad management

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Santa Rosa, CA

ProsWork with some of the smartest people in town

ConsManagement is more concerned with kingdom building than treating the employees well.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you're more concerned about the future of your career than the future of the company, perhaps your future should be elsewhere.

    Under new ownership now

    Account Executive (Former Employee)
    Santa Rosa, CA

ProsThe pay was decent and most of the co-workers were nice

ConsAt the time I was there they had removed sales assistants and the sales people were responsible for processing and selling. Work load was very heavy. Long hours. I heard it may be better now as they have changed the structure and are under new ownership.

Forward thinking company that values the opinions of its employees.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Santa Rosa, CA

ProsExcellent benefits including substantial paid time off. The compensation appears to be much higher than that of other companies in the surrounding areas and I always feel valued as an employee.

ConsThere are many benefits of being owned by such a large company (NYT), however, at times this can have a negative impact on the speed of change as there are multiple steps in the approval process.

    Multi Media Consultant (Current Employee)
    Santa Rosa, CA

ProsBenefits are good and the salary is average

ConsInternal politics, lack of communication or chnage to it's employees, always feeling as though today might be your last working there.
a confusion as what products will be sold and by whom.
an overall lack of quality leadership.

Advice to Senior ManagementClean house, create a new environment by replacing most of the old guard. stay the course with digital and reward those whom have educated knowledge of what should be sold when.
too many order takers and print pushers
