I worked at Principal Financial Group as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The Principal is like a family, everyone is on the same team and tries to help out one another. Most supervisors want to help their subordinates grow and progress in their careers. Also, great place to enjoy fun company events.

    Cons

Most everything that I saw was great, I really cannot think much of the cons of this particular company, other than to request for educational benefits if seeking to attend college while working.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would say, I always promote educational opportunities to your employees.

I have been working at Principal Financial Group as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very good product line and overall integrity of the company. Managers seem to care and want to offer support...especially if you are male! Office culture is good and everyone is friendly. As a company it is one of the best in the industry for range of products.

    Cons

With a commission only job you need to have a very strong infrastructure of high end referrals and financial resources to fall on until you build the business. Be prepared to hire assistants and work extremely hard. The first years are expensive with memberships to associations, treating prospects to meals, marketing expenses, etc. Long hours and lots of frustration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Follow through with what you promise and be consistent. Provide tangible help to new agents with leads and prospecting resources.

    Pros

Great benefits, which is nice because salaries are less than annual averages.

    Cons

This could have simply been my department, but mistakes were never forgotten, no matter how large or small. Promotions and job recommendations were given to friendlies instead of the most qualified.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire managers with experience in managing people!

    Pros

Flexibility in schedule, where we work, how work gets done. Flexibility is not only offered, but also encouraged! Co-workers, benefits and pay are great. Ethics/doing the right thing is a focus of this company. Love that we have PTO since it's so much easier to manage.

    Cons

Parking is a little ways away since we're located in downtown Des Moines.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to communicate openly with employees. Much appreciated!

I have been working at Principal Financial Group full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

IT Specific: Some parts of the company are surely "OK". However, you may spend 20 years trying to find that area that fits you. It is nice being downtown with access to the skywalks. Generally, nobody tries to micromanage you.

    Cons

IT Specific: If you can do lots of things, don't bother here. They want people to be "siloed" and focus on your one tiny piece. Then you can fight the layers upon layers of nonsense to get any little thing done. There are so many redundant groups full of way too many people. The company is not nimble, and they have meetings upon meetings over discussing how things should be done.
