Pros
- mostly good people, young & fun co-workers
- travel opportunities, air miles/hotel points
- constant change from one project to the next (although this is the nature of consulting)
- no issues taking time off
- good work/life balance (only if you are NOT traveling for a client project)
Cons
- compensation at lower levels is well below market, this is especially true for NYC (the company doesn't adjust compensation enough for cost of living)
- experiences will vary greatly depending on what project you get placed on, you can get stuck on a crappy project which can last for months, sometimes years!
- most project work is very boring, highly repetitive
- when you are not on a project, you can't work from home....and when you are traveling, you must fly home on friday evenings, not thursdays....this can make it hard to have good work/life balance ifyou are traveling for work
- very little motivation to do anything more than the bare minimum, promotions will not happen any earlier, bonuses are a joke
- very very few miniorities in middle, upper-mgmt....none in senior mgmt
- high performers will almost always leave for better compensation/opportunities, leaving a bunch of mediocre people at the top who just played the "waiting game"
- experienced hires will get promoted faster and get paid better....the company does not reward loyalty unless you are part of the old arthur anderson crowd
- no cell phones for non-mgmt, crappy benefits, 401k match is a joke
- the company is struggling to get recover from crisis, therefore there are no perks, penny pinching galore
Advice to Senior Management
growth and profitabilty happen by investing your people!!!
Pros
If you're up for change, Protiviti can be an exciting place to work because you never know where you will find your niche. You may end up in a specific industry or service line you never imagined would be fulfilling.
Cons
Because everybody's path is different, it is very hard to compare employees. As a result, managers are forced to have monthly meetings to discuss consultants and seniors and how they can be scheduled based on specific skill sets. While this is a necessary evil of the industry, it creates the "Halo/Horn" effect where consultants and seniors are constantly judged. This creates an environment where promotions are self-fulfilling prophesies and some consultants will never be given an opportunity to succeed.
Advice to Senior Management
Open the avenues of communication to more than just managers and above. Don't assume that what is said in management meetings ever makes it back to your consultants.
Pros
Lots of good experience right off the bat, good exposure to upper level management and executives and lots of room for growth if you are willing to dedicate yourself and work hard
Cons
travel can be excessive at times and is not evenly distributed, compensation is low compared to market and sometimes even internal salaries.
Advice to Senior Management
increase compensation for those you value; keep in tune with the employees needs and encourage a learning environment for continued growth and retention
Pros
Experience in multiple industries
Experience in multiple service lines
Great contacts
Cons
Up to 50% travel can get exhausting
Pros
Culture, people you work with, youth/energy, supportive of work/life balance, allowing more travel national when someone wants the opportunity, trying to rebranded itself, much less SOX work in the past, access to Senior Management, Senior Management is receptive to ideas.
Cons
Limited diversity of work that is dependent on what your office focused on, limited talent at specific skills because of size, because of downturn has reduced size considerably but starting to grow again
Advice to Senior Management
Need stronger MDs who have better ties with the local market C-levels. Otherwise, it will continue to struggle competing/growing in the local market.
Pros
Flexibility willing to work with you when need time off.
Cons
Too spread out..,.no tight relationships...all statewide calling in.
Advice to Senior Management
To hire people who have experience and competence to conduct job.
Pros
make friends, learn the basics, get promoted, room for growth, some flexibility in working hours, experiencing different industries and companies.
Cons
retention, compensation, 401k plan, client placement/commuting.
Advice to Senior Management
Don't just talk the talk, but walk the walk. Retention was a big topic of the FY10Q3 earnings call, however there was no action at the end of the year. As such people started fleeing Protiviti immediately.
Pros

Cons
-Can be difficult to maintain personal obligations/responsibilities with the amount of travel required
