Pros
* Perfect student job because they are very flexible with work schedules
* Pay is good for what it is
* if you stay long enough (over a year) you will get the quartely bonuses given to all associates(higher selling stores have higher bonuses)
* Stock options given to all associates who stay long enough (again over one year)
Cons
*ALOT of work.... its not rocket science but there are no breaks while youre on the clock
* Odd hours (i closed the store every day i worked 3pm - 12am.... rarely got to leave before 12)
* ^ This as because the stock clerk have to fix or level all the aisles before getting to leave at night
* I thought of it as being the managers hands in a sense because they cant be everywhere all the time to deal with the store so they hire us to do the tedious things (I.E. filling shelves, unloading trucks, making bales and leveling)
* Needs to increase pay raise rate for higher performers instead of giving $0.5 - $0.25 give $1.00 or more to the people who are there a long time and perform well
Advice to Senior Management
Best advice i can give to management would be to take care of high performers (I.E. pay) and be more motivational. Dont use people as much as you can in there 35 or 40 hr windows of the week and then immediately cut them off when they reach the 35 or 40 hr maximum
Pros
benefits - but only available after 1 year of in indentured servitude. you have to put up with a lot to make it. I understand, the benefits are great and not just anyone should be entitled to them.
Cons
It depends on your immediate supervisor. I received little to no training other than to just do it then get harshly corrected when you do it wrong. Pay is pathetic and you don't get raises until 6 months. Expect your first job review - regardless of your performance- to be weak. Customers, knowing company policy of "never say no", for the most part, act like spoiled brats and expect you to fulfill there every request no matter how outrageous or petty. Don't expect a lot of "pleases" and "thank yous" either. Rough job even when you try and rise above it all because the customers basically treat you like crap.
Advice to Senior Management
My department manager is there because he/she put in the time and passed a test - aren't real motivational and aren't very good at creating a cohesive team of people willing to work together. Lots of conflict and animosity within department. Look for leadership ability, and/or train it. "X" years of service and the ability to study a book does not a leader make.
Pros
Great place to work. Competent management and most co-workers are sane/competent. Lots of opportunities to advance to management if you are motivated and committed to work. Great benefits such as stock private to Publix associates only, 401k contribution matching (up to $750 a year in Publix stock), and you are given stock in an ESOP every year plus dividends on that free stock. Pay is ok but you'll hit the pay cap pretty quick if you aren't able to move up.
Cons
To even be considered for full time, you must have complete availability for work seven days a week. Disappointing considering I have been interested in FT for the longest time and this new requirement will not make FT possible for me until I am out of school.
Boca/Delray area customers are for the most part AWFUL and downright rude a lot of the time. You need to have tough skin and an ability to deflect the nastiness or you will get eaten alive.
Advice to Senior Management
Pay caps need to be considered for raises more often, especially considering inflation and this crap economy. Full time is already so hard for hardworking and deserving associates to reach and the new availability requirement excludes many of these associates that can't give total availability. Publix upper management needs to man up and give store managers more leeway to fire associates that are deadweight. Too many associates that were made FT are a drag on payroll and abuse the crap out of the system.
Pros
Very easy atmosphere to work in.
Cons
Pay scale and advancement opportunities
Pros
Publix offered great hours and benefits for students looking to get into the workforce without sacrificing their education. I would highly recommend working there.
Cons
I feel management did not promote college and wanted some of the employees to continue to work and forgo college alltogether.
Pros
Learning to deal with people from all walks of life. Working for a large company which gives you much more job security.
Cons
Being bottom of the barrel, constant working in the heat. Do not work there if you don't like children, or rude customers.
Advice to Senior Management
Realize that the baggers and cashiers are the people who really run the store, and to recognize that we all matter.
Pros
stock, bonuses, benefits, medical, security
Cons
sometimes feel unappreciated and belittled by district managers
Advice to Senior Management
stop poor iplh down our throats,,,,,,
Pros
Benefits you get, after working a million years there.
Cons
You are told you have to do every job in the store but only get paid for doing one type of position.
Advice to Senior Management
Don't have any advice.
Pros
Excellent benefits- they are outstanding an comparable to much higher level positions at other employers. There is also good camaraderie among the staff.
Cons
Lots of yelling by management, no support of staff when there are complaints about management, they do not follow prescribed breaks- sometimes you get a break, sometimes you don't; lunch is an hour unpaid. Promotions are very biased- they give tests; they don't follow results because are interested in only advancing certain kinds of people.
Advice to Senior Management
Be fair, listen and admit when staff members raise concerns. When junior managers misbehave discipline them the same way you do staff.
Pros
Flexible with time-off and school for part-timers. Starting pay for front-end associates is horrible and advancement is not common. Promotions are nice at the store, but only until you hit a certain wage and then they try to lower your evaluation so you won't get a pay raise. Health/dental/vision insurance is nice but only for full-time associates. 401K, but only really works out if Publix will be your career. Free hot lunches at distribution center. Decent money at distribution center, but could be better for the hard work selectors do.
Cons
Where to begin.
Three years at the store I have seen way too many disrespectful managers, including the store manager. Always looking down at you like you haven't done your job well enough. Never complimenting on a job well done. Always telling you how to do your own job when they don't know how to their own effectively. The attitudes of the customers coming in on a daily basis doesn't help either.
Managers at the Distribution Center aren't any different either. Always looking at number-crunches and never looking at the exhausted faces of the folks that do the work. We don't like to work 9-11 hour shifts so don't say we won't be when you know we will be. Managers also don't like to communicate well with other associates so morale is sometimes terrible.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your associates!!! They know when something is wrong and probably have a way to help fix it. Don't ever look down at them like they are worth nothing and always always always comment and compliment on their work. I almost never heard any compliments from managers at my 3 years at the store.
