    Pros

Help with school money. Learning from THE BEST about true customer service. Very accommodating to a disabled employee (cane/wheelchair/stool to sit on).

    Cons

Transferring to a different store brings it's own challenges. But once they realize you're a hard worker, well trained & capable on the register...it gets better!

I have been working at Publix part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Most of the people that I've worked with have been great and hard-working people.

Flexible scheduling for high school and college students.
Good way for young people to make some money and get a couple years job experience.

Job opportunities can be good if you give it all for Publix.

    Benefits:
    401(K)
    Stock
    IRA Retirement
Insurance (Dental and Health) (if you work 1500 hours a year)
    Tuition reimbursement
Vacation pay and time (if you're full-time)
Sick pay and and time (again, only if you're full-time)
    Bonuses

    Cons

    Long hours on feet

    No breaks beside lunch break

Sometimes work long shifts: 10-12 hours is very common among full time workers and even part time people. Managers work 11-13 hours everyday.

Scheduling is not consistent at all which makes for poor life/work balance.

Have to work 1500 hours every year in order to be qualified for heath insurance, this can be difficult for part timers.

I haven't had too many rude customers, most everyone is nice but there are a lot of annoying and obnoxious ones.

"Customer is always right" policy means that Publix always takes the customers side over the employees even in cases where the customer is dead wrong. This can cause resentment towards some of the customers.

Publix has a tendency to cater to whiny and irate customers.

All the rules can be overbearing. Sometimes it feels like Publix nitpicks at everything little thing that you do wrong and you end up getting written up for it. It makes working there feel more like a communist country at times.

Workers sometimes have to do things that they weren't hired to do such as baggers and cashiers cleaning bathrooms or taking on the role of a janitor.

Some of the workers can be cliquish and make you feel left out.

We have to block the store on some nights, which seems pointless since the stockers come in late at night to stock the store anyway.

I have been working at Publix

    Pros

They are very enthusiastic about their company...and expect you to be as well. They will work with you.

    Cons

Cleaning (floors/bathrooms/everything) is expected of everyone regardless of position. This is not explained in the interview. Health coverage is offered to part time employees BUT only after one year of employment (1500) hours. Yes, they give you stock after one year but don't let the dollar signs blind you! Buying stock 4x a year is better if you can afford it. Interviews are seriously lacking in real information.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Thank your employees after the day is over! BTW. Training is overly repetitive. We get it!

I worked at Publix as an intern (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Pharmacy in a grocery store atmosphere, so customers can go do their shopping while waiting for their prescription instead of standing there staring at you (of course they did this too, but not as much). Lower volumes of prescriptions, not as corporate as CVS or Walgreens which was very nice.

    Cons

Working as an intern - you have to work at least once every 28 days or you are kicked out of the system and sometimes is very hard to get back in. I worked there for 3 years and this happened to me, now I can't get a job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your past employees a little better.

I have been working at Publix full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Training always available, culture is prevalent, updated management pay is quite nice, the theory of how the company is supposed to work is enjoyable...

    Cons

...however, the "good ol' boy" idea of promotion and promoting based on how much one is liked is ridiculous. If a store is failing, look at the management...don't promote a manager within that store, if their department is falling apart.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to those that have been around for a while and know what they're talking about. Be willing to listen and actually do something about it, not just pretend you care.

I have been working at Publix part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible Schedule. Good Management. Great benefits for a retailer, with an expanding market.

    Cons

Unfortunately with the size of the company individuals are less important. There is always people ready to take your job so your personal needs are not usually weighed in. They are slowly cutting associate benefits especially to part timers while also cutting full time positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember were you started and how Publix became successful in providing customer service by treating their employees right.

    Former Employee - Grocery Clerk

I worked at Publix part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good pay, benefits were decent at first, offered dental but not good coverage, close to everything, good products, good sales

    Cons

Insurance went down, dental coverage was limited & poor, management was selective as to who could get away with what, management allowed minorities to get away with more, some managers were sexist, schedules were made based on likes & dislikes, retaliation is quite common, human resources is useless, management jumps you like dogs attacking if you try to complain, management makes up lies & doesn't allow associates to prove their innocence, not all associates are held to dress code standards including wearing their hair down, wearing improper shoes, wearing other items not part of their uniform, & some associates can wear decorations for holidays while others are made to take them off, other associates are basically harassed for the slightest imperfection of their uniform, managesr talks about associates behind their backs, managers tells associates they can be management even though they don't mean it but doesn't help them fix the problems keeping them from advancing, members of management have obvious favorites & dislikes, also flirts with young girls in the store, as well as shares inappropriate information with associates, the associates who don't do their job aren't reprimanded for their screw ups so others have to fix their screw ups but then they're reprimanded for poor time management due to fixing other problems, managers micro manage too much costing too many man hours to be wasted, & the list goes on. I'm told most stores aren't like this but why couldn't this one be normal?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This isn't high school or a dating scene. Be managers not friends. Clean up shop. Get rid of the employees who can't appreciate a pay check. Stop hiring more people if you don't have the hours to give the people you already have. Treat people how you want to be treated. Act morally. You represent Publix. If you lie, Publix is a liar. If you cheat, Publix is a cheat. Act like a representative. To higher ups, you're not the MOB so stop trying to scare employees into submission. To the human resources department, if someone is unable to fulfill their job requirements then it's time to step down. Too many associates are depending on your department to protect them. Don't pass on the job to the very people the issue is about. You know that isn't going to help one bit.
