    good intentions on a shoe-string

Current Contractor - Adjunct Professor in Purchase, NY

I have been working at Purchase College as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

As an adjunct, teach two classes a semester and get full health benefits. The students are talented and creative and mostly a joy to work with. This is NOT an apathetic student body!

    Cons

As an adjunct, you're not paid a living wage, but in fairness, Purchase pays its adjuncts better than many other places. The SUNY system is unsurprisingly a big bureaucracy: layers where you don't need them and holes where you do and insufficient money or willpower to change this.
Adjuncts flow through regularly, because no one can afford to stay for long.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create some kind of incentive to retain your better adjuncts. All departments would function better with a more stable faculty, and adjuncts would take more pride in their work if they felt more valued.

I worked at Purchase College part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Very laid back. I was heavily encouraged to take lead, and organize and make decisions the way I saw fit. They also paid for training.

    Cons

You'd have to live in white plains, there isn't much there. Minimal room for advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep it up. Create advancement opportunities, encourage more cross disciplinary study and initiative.

I worked at Purchase College part-time

    Pros

Easy job, nice environment, friendly co-workers and more often than not, the clientele is friendly.

    Cons

Pay isn't great and raises come once a year. The computer system, staff ideas, and administration are all stuck in the past.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Realize that this is the 21st century.

I worked at Purchase College part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Medical benefits to those who can qualify

    Cons

Bad leadership in Athletic Department. Change at the top is needed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the side of your coaches rather than the students. Then you won't be needing to hire new coaches every year

    Enjoyable and relatively laid back

I worked at Purchase College part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

There is a good team working at the Purchase Registrars office. There are several full time employees who are aided by student workers. Everyone is a team player and communicates well. Work involves data entry, phone and walk-in assistance, as well as class scheduling with the student body.

    Cons

Can sometimes be understaffed if student workers do not show up for their shift. Is not necessarily challenging work but there can be a substantial amount to be done in a day. (not a problem at all if you're a hard worker)

    Cons

Underfunded, employees are overworked and bitter, lots of politics

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have to find a way to make employees feel appreciated, especially since they are poorly compensated
