ProsFrom not bad starting wage up to good wage after 2 years.
Benefits pretty good.
Some chance for advancement to other positions.
Weekends off.

ConsDepot too small and in poor shape; equipment and even some vehicles often falling apart. Maintenance and vision are often four letter words with this company.

Like most places crap flows downhill; be prepared to try to cover your own ass especially if you are near the bottom of the totem pole. Little concern or attempt to improve conditions and processes; more emphasis on who to blame despite all the b.s. management says about "teamwork".

Employee hours are cut when things slower; no sales team or anyone else used to help get more business. Split shifts can be exhausting.

Everyone making sure their "stats" are good from managers on down. Shortcuts taken to make "stats" look good creates more pressure and work for those at the bottom.

Pressure to make up time for things beyond your control (ex. late trailers, scanner errors, etc.)

Many payroll errors due to management's "mistakes". No real consequences for management knowingly doing things they aren't supposed to. Employees can be written up, management can't. No consequences financial or otherwise for screwing over employees on "mistakes".

Hiring and employee replacement process has to be first done through another city. Questionable choices made on their 'weeding out' process for resumes and a slow process in general. Also, lack of planning when management knows certain employees are on holidays or are going to be away.

Grievance process sucks. If your union rep. doesn't file the proper paperwork and quickly send it away you will automatically lose your grievance. If appears you are not allowed to directly file these forms yourself.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore concern for how the whole process is working and less on "stats" that can be fudged.
Most shortcuts just lead to more needless rushed half-assed work done. Often with extra "handling" of freight.
While management is spouting "teamwork", they are usually creating an atmosphere of everyone take as many shortcuts you can get away with, do a job at the minimum standards, and be sure to cover your own ass, and help out others only when it somehow benefits you.

Better maintenance of vehicles, better design of warehouse with more space. Customer service suffers due to lots of pressure on the people doing the actual work (Sorters, Couriers, Front store staff). If you don't think drivers write up blue slips for apartments they don't slow down for never mind enter, and sorters don't throw freight you are living in a fantasy world. The AM crew is pressured to leave early without setting things up properly for the PM crew, some driver's don't take off items on their trucks they are supposed to because they know any blame will land on the Sorters. You can't even get a dust pan replaced that is barely held together with packing tape much less the bigger stuff.

Have a system where management or someone can contact the receiver or shipper of packages to correct constant misdirects. For one example, a shipment to a large department store ends up at our depot time and again due to the same one letter error in the postal code. This creates the wrong province appearing on the label (one 3 provinces away); have to correct or black out the incorrect information. Similar problems occur with having just the wrong postal code (also, hardly anyone anywhere else seems to read the city on the label even if the package has gone back and forth several times - they must just look at the code or postal code only).

Management and drivers sometime complains about sorter's missorts, yet load charts and the main chart is not even close to up to date. Should they care about every box getting on the right spot in every truck when there are gaps and misinformation on the main chart and load lists?

Upper management reluctant to put money towards fixing/ maintaining depot because depot is supposedly going to expand or be rebuilt. Talk of this goes on for years. How about fixing what you have for day to day work now?

When upper management makes their rare visits, should spend less time smoozing with depot managers and more time asking the real employees what can be done to make things run more efficiently. Even depot management should be doing this.

Lastly, no one cares about Tom Schmitt's newsletters. If he wants to call everyone 'teammate' in his newsletters, how about he gives out some tickets and airfare to low level employees to all the cross country NHL games we see him pictured in his newsletters while he is "working".

Prosgreat benefits, flexible hours, fun atmosphere and stability in the workforce. Fairly safe as far as security goes. Good place to work if you like to be challenged in outside the box thinking.

ConsMiddle management is treated the same or worse than the unionized employees. Minimum salary adjustments. Virtually no difference in salary to top paid drivers. Very little recognition unless your married to your boss.

Advice to Senior ManagementRespect your managers. Show them that the work they do is worth something. Recognize their hard work. Encourage your managers to continue their education, and let them take the time to go to school.

ProsI found PCL's comp and benefits package competitive. Good support for job training and professional development. Good opportunites to move within the company to develop professionally. Proven commitment to Employer of Choice initiatives.

ConsNot enough support for transfer of knowledge, and job training. Learn as you go, trial by fire environment. Management not quick to have your back. Lips service to work/life balance. You better have good daycare if your kid is sick. Lots of new initiatives without the manpower resources to support them...string staff resources really thin with the volume of work- even for someone not afraid to work hard.

Advice to Senior ManagementUpper management need to make middle management accountable for how they treat their staff. They need to increase education and awareness of workplace bullying and intimidation. They also need to match some resources to all of the great initiatives that are being introduced.

ProsGood corporate culture. It's nice to now that people have a place to hang out after work if they so choose.

ConsCareer Progression. You really have to press your manager if you want to have any prospects of moving up the ladder.

Advice to Senior ManagementI would tell management to pay more attention to the needs to their employees. If they are not satisfied professionally, it could have negative consequences in day to day work.

Consgyped on pay, get shortchanged at times. overworked, underpaid, overtime is expected. must make up time if away even though you've worked overtimeget Blamed for why customers are complaining. usually it's when someone else doesn't do their job. Have to chase other coworkers to give you the answers you need to assist customer. too many billing errors. Warning letters handed out too freely. Management doesn't listen to two sides of the story.
