I worked at Purolator Courier as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Employees are very friendly. Expectations are reasonable. Depending on the department and role, you may have the option to work from home occasionally.

    Cons

Tech is a little backward. There is no training for their SAP system, which is complex and has too many restrictions; spent a lot of time figuring out how to make it work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Having been around for a long time, and being partially government owned (Canada Post), there is some complacency in the culture. Everyone wants to report good news. This often means overlooking important insights. Also, no-one seems to really understand costing and pricing.

    Pros

Overall good company to work for. Lots of opportunities. great benefits great staff. love the delivery aspect of the job

    Cons

The hardest part of the job was the toll it takes on your body after a certain period of time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management overall was pretty good, nice people. The main issue I had with management was unfair expectations for a job they have never performed

I worked at Purolator Courier full-time

    Pros

Progressive company with a vision to lead the market in the package delivery and transportation industry in Canada. Employees are very loyal to the company, and there is a family atmosphere. The new CEO and his senior leadership team are highly motivated for growth and profitability as well as for the welfare of the employees and social responsibility. All in all, a good company to work for.

    Cons

Although it is a private corporation, the company is mostly owned by the parent company who is a Canadian Crown Corporation. This often results in some added bureaucracy, public sector-like rules, and risk adverse decisions, making the company less nimble and aggressive in a highly competitive marketplace.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep developing the vision and execute. Remember to develop excellent people and the organizational processes. Invest in technology as a way of leapfrogging the competition.

I have been working at Purolator Courier full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Training, descent benefits, some great managers.
    Union job good compensation.
    Non union, good compensation.

    Cons

The Leadership team has no idea whats really happening on the Directors levels.
There is no room to advance.
    Regional Managers are useless.
    District Managers are as well.
Unit Managers get rotated, very rarely will you get a position in management.
If you speak up, you'll never move up the ladder. You'll be walked out the door.
If you conform you might get a chance.
They do not value wonderful employees.
Stellar employees leave for better jobs.
And employees who have been there for more than 10 years should expect not to be there too much longer.
30 year employees are getting walked out the door, it is a toxic paranoia that has employees wondering who's next.
No loyalty to long term good review employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a grip, if you keep this attitude up your going to keep losing great people, get your ducks in order your being scrutinized by your employees and nobody trusts your ridiculous updates on the intranet, seems all like a bit of a lie after what you've allowed to happen to some of your most loyal employees. I've seen one of the nicest and most loyal person lose their job, they didn't deserve it, you keep crunching numbers but your not thinking its the employees that got you to where you are and the same people your letting go will be helping bigger better businesses get to where their going especially in the courier industry. You show no loyalty to your employees, after all we are just a number.

I have been working at Purolator Courier full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

High degree of autonomy on the job. If you perform well you will be left to do the job the way you see fit.Great "can do" culture. Tight / good working relationships at same co-workers levels.

    Cons

Inconsistent message about strategy and cutting back to make plan. Always seems to be a crisis. Opportunities for promotion feel limited. Feels like majority of senior management are hired from outside the company.

I worked at Purolator Courier full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Purolator is training and providing skillset to make individuals extremely successful in their future careers outside of the company. On the manager side, they teach people how not to treat others. When individuals leave they know how it feels to be disrespected and learn never to make others feel that way.

    Cons

Some are compensated well for their roles, and others are cheated on base pay/bonus; depends on how much you know and who your direct manager is. You can only receive a good performance review if you direct manager "likes you". There is a lot of talk about people, yet the reality is everyone is treated as a number. When you're number is up you are restructured; internally anyone with over 10 years of seniority knows they don't have much time left. Not if, but when you are restructured, at first you feel sorry for yourself and angry; then you feel great that you're no longer there and terrible for the good people "whom are left behind".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Top management needs to open their eyes/ears to what is really happing under their departments direct reports. Things start on the 6th floor but by the time it reaches middle-management the messages changes to front-line managers. Many of the middle manager has ego issues and everyone knows it. Keep good people, your people are your foundation and restructure all the senior staff is wrong and unethical!
