Pros
Speaking only for Qualcomm Innovation Center, Qualcomm's Android arm:
The company atmosphere is encouraging and helpful, allowing relative freedom for individuals to pursue opportunities of their choice. Teams are small and tight knit and most work is done in labs to facilitate collaboration. There is little bureaucracy to get in the way of work. People are generally in a good mood and happy to accomplish things.
Cons
Having not quite shed its roots as a manufacturing company, Qualcomm suffers from a lack of documentation and testing practices. However this is improving (slowly).
Managers sometimes do not have time for their employees due to overtaxed schedules, and occasionally long hours will be required due to tight release schedules and continuous patching of poorly designed software.
Advice to Senior Management
Retrain/reduce the workload of middle management to allow them to properly address the needs of their employees.
Encourage better testing practices and introduce better documentation and training.
Pros
* Market leader in cellphone business, so given opportunity to learn how to accomplish job in a professional way.
* Good documentation and review process during the design and testing phase.
* Provides reasonable compensation and good health care.
* The job is reasonably challenging, and at the same time provides time to be social.
Cons
* The company is too big and it is getting difficult to move up in the ladder.
Pros
reasonable environment, good reward, good management
Cons
lack of challenge, sometimes not the best envirnment for advancing
Pros
Work on the latest technology but not enough staff to do the job.
Cons
Finger pointing. Can not make a mistake.
Advice to Senior Management
VP needs to take accountability instead fo pointing finger at your subodinates.
Pros
The internship program had very good compensation and excellent accommodations. They also hosted a lot of social events to help interns meet each other.
Cons
During my summer internship, I wasn't given a lot of responsibility or particularly challenging work and didn't really use or expand my technical skills.
Advice to Senior Management
Managers should try to give interns a project that will help them to further their technical skills and not just busy work.
Pros
Great perks
Smart People
Cool San Diego
State-of-the-art technology
Cons
Although it is a great place to work, bureacracy rules big time. Everything gets delayed, since there is a lot of hierarchy
Advice to Senior Management
Initiate recognition and rewards for outstanding employees. re-organise the hierarchy with less or no bureaucracy. More work-life balance needed, since most employees spend time in office.
Pros
- Good benefits
- Calm culture
- Generally nice people
Cons
- Decent facilities
- Salary packages not competent for non-engineering (non-core programming) employees
- Very slow culture (need to be more action oriented)
- Low visibility of career progression (slow promotions cycles - 4-5 yrs on an avg!)
Advice to Senior Management
Pay more attention to where people want to be in the next 3-5 yrs. Mentor program is existing but invisible. Managers sometimes try to micromanage. Go social.
Pros
excelent benefits and decent salary
Cons
too many meeting and politics
Advice to Senior Management
1 one 1 meeting to find out what is behind the scence
Pros
Overall Qualcomm is an Okay place to work. Everything depends on your team lead. If you are with a good lead, you are fine. Otherwise, life is not easy.
Cons
Lots of pressure, hard to get promoted as there are lots of competition. The number of people who can get promoted is very limited. Many times people in my team have to work overtime to meet deadlines.
Pros
Great quality of work. Great work culture.
Cons
Big company. HR might disappoint you.
Advice to Senior Management
None at the moment. I'm new.
