Great company going downhill fast

Staff Engineer (Current Employee)
San Diego, CA

I have been working at Qualcomm full-time for more than 8 years

ProsDecent healthcare benefits, ESPP, 401K matching

ConsThe company culture has declined drastically in the past 5 years. This is an extremely political place to work, and if you're in with the good old boys, then you're set; if not, get ready to see your career stagnate. Reviews are not based on merit but instead on one's manager's and VP's perceptions. Very few women in senior technical roles, and very basic benefits for parents. Lactation rooms lack sinks and are adjacent to offices or meeting rooms. Instead of getting on board with equal maternity and paternity leave like most tech companies, the company provides the minimum mandated state leave and no more. HR is worthless; instead of addressing harassment and discrimination complaints, they state that they cannot protect the employee against retaliation (untrue in California). Multiple incidents of bullying, discrimination and harassment, even a couple of suicides, have not resulted in any attempts to improve the work environment. People are forced to come in when they are sick, work on weekends and nights, and work during vacation. Not to mention that compensation is not adjusted to market rates for employees who have been in the company for over 4 years. As a result, newer employees are paid 10-30% more than equally seasoned employees who have been loyal to the company for years. Hopefully Qualcomm can clean up its culture and get back to the great company it was - trimming the fat (and there's lots of it) will get the company back to its core values and allow it to innovate.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop promoting buddies - instead promote on merit
Standardize the review process and have hard guidelines instead of leaving it subjective
Pay all employees fairly
Figure out why people are jumping off buildings and dropping like flies in the office, and do something about it instead of acting like nothing happened
Address complaints about discrimination and harassment instead of threatening employees with retaliation

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

ProsBenefits are excellent, company is growing fast.

Good benefits, bad experience

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Qualcomm full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGood pay and benefits. Some great people. Highly successful in the market.

ConsMy departure was very unprofessional. Promoted for my work, then 1-2 months later my product line was shut down. I was contacted by management and told I was safe and to please NOT look for another position. About 4 weeks later I was told there was no work for me and I was given my notice - never saw it coming. Severance was decent and part of the issue was being in a satellite office - but I could have had another position lined up instead of hitting the street. It seemed they were cutting for cutting sake and not targeting less productive personnel.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't make promises if you don't intend to keep them.

Great company to work for!

Director, Business Development (Former Employee)
San Diego, CA

I worked at Qualcomm full-time

ProsExposure to very innovative and interesting technologies and more importantly, the people who are involved with developing and bringing these products to market.

ConsNo place is perfect, and Qualcomm is not perfect wither. It gets pretty close, but it appears that the politics got in the way of real progress at times. It was disappointing to see, but this is a large company and it's bound to happen.

Advice to Senior ManagementReally look at who your contributors are as an overall course of business process.

Always investing in great technology

Staff Engineer (Current Employee)
San Diego, CA

I have been working at Qualcomm full-time for more than 5 years

ProsTechnology and investment within the company
Visible impact in the mobile industry
Room to grow
Great benefits (medical, ESPP, 401K)
Good stock to own
Meet great minds

ConsHard to interact with those great minds
Hard to get time to explore new ideas and new areas (there is no 20% time)
Very driven by customer demand leading to sometimes long working hours and firefighting

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow employees to get time to innovate and think. This will allow more opportunities to find great solutions to interesting problems.
