Many standards for efficiency and productivity are in place to optimize product timelines; hard to get in permanently.

I worked at Qualcomm as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

This company is very organized in project planning, team coordination to support the various objectives, and allocating technical resources to each team. The different RF IC functional blocks, such as RX, TX, synth, and reliability, are dynamically assigned reasonable resources and time to complete. Team leads are competent technically and lead well.

    Cons

The position that coordinates test instruction between Product Design and Production Test overlaps shift changes and often requires long hours to cover morning and evening, and weekends. Not technically challenging, so difficult to develop new skills the company needs to value you as a keeper.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the company policy to allow managers to keep temp employees indefinitely, and make a path to a permanent position.

I worked at Qualcomm full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good employee focus. Work environment, benefits still ahead of the crowd. Great place to start one role and be given the opportunity to move into others.

    Cons

Having said all of the above, it has changed significantly from the beginning. That is to be expected, but becoming a publicly traded company in '91 started a move away from the culture that existed in the earlier days. Many believe management has lost focus on what made this company great.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't forget your roots, the fundamental environment that was created early on, and the people that created it.

I have been working at Qualcomm full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The culture tends to reward those who figure out how to use their strengths, experience and ideas in collaboration with others.

    Cons

The culture tends to ignore those who like to show up to just do the work. Structure is there, but not always clear. Sometimes the work can seem all-consuming and individuals have to figure out how to negotiate how to do it better or differently. Very San Diego centric, so working in other locations can involve travel and extra effort to network and stay in touch.
