I worked at Qualcomm full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

A focus on the employee and the quality of their life while at work and at home. Excellent benefits, great services at work - health clinic, gym, etc. Movies shown in company theater. Ceremony for veteran's day. Paul Jacobs was a very engaged CEO. Would talk to any employee. Would see him in meetings with all levels of employee. He loved getting his hands dirty with the engineers. Tons of respect for him.

    Cons

Very much an engineering culture. If you aren't an engineer you can be made to feel stupid. Hard culture ot break into. Many people have worked there for their entire career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Preserve the culture of caring for your employees at all costs. You can't put a price on it and you do it better than enywhre I have ever worked!

    Cons

    - Lifers are dragging the company down. They fill up the middle management ranks, and prevent new employees from rising up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut the fat. Get rid of the lifers who have been sitting on their laurels for a decade. Make room for the new generation of motivated engineers.

I worked at Qualcomm full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Review done every 6 months...good benefit package.

    Cons

Lots of late hours and weekend work expected from most engineers and sr engineers...bad managers with bad people skills carrying out directions and pushing it down to whoever...no work life balance at all. HR will mostly take management side...I saw hired consultants not getting paid for weekend work, management wont approve their hours. Maybe ok if you are not working for QCT /Target SW division...not worth sacrificing family time just for the great benefit package...there are plenty of othe companies in San Diego who will pay more salary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop some people skills. Treat employees as you want to be treated.

I worked at Qualcomm as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits for an internship, got code-reviewed, which is good for becoming a better programmer. Having a lot of other interns makes for a decent social scene outside of work.

    Cons

The company doesn't really care about your intern project, doesn't give you real responsibilities, relatively low interaction with full time engineers who could foster your growth better. The company culture also felt like the majority of people in my office weren't trying to take on significant responsibility nor were proactive about contributing to the company; excitement level is quite low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't recycle intern projects (we know you do), just give small scale projects that you think can actually be used in the long term but are relatively lower impact. Encourage more interaction between interns and mentors.
