Challenging with limited reward and very little vision from the Executives

    Manager (Former Employee)
    Honolulu, HI

ProsGreat staff, knowledgeable, benefits were good, salary (though low) was OK

ConsExecutives don't understand what is really happening
Not enough resources at all levels because of nickel and diming, though apparently the Sr Execs get a hot lunch everyday???
No chance for advancement based on knowledge and performance

Advice to Senior ManagementCome and do as you say.....more rounding with staff, listen, have a vision, spend money wisely

Not the best place for career advancement if you are not a medical professional

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsIf you only want a 'job' then it is a good place.

ConsThe PTO is inadequate as there is no separate sick leave.
Professionals who are not medical staff are given few avenues for career development. Be very aware that it is almost impossible to move up, either in title or salary.
Policies, if they exist, are applied selectively, not unilaterally, which devalues them.

Advice to Senior ManagementAn effective HR is adept at identifying, recruiting, managing, developing, retaining and compensating people to help build a successful organization. This does not describe the QMC HR environment.

Enjoyed working with many talented, motivated people with a Healthcare leadership organization.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGood staff.Good environment. The kind of place you can enjoy coming to work at every day. One of the leading hospitals in the Pacific Rim.

ConsA lot of internal politics. More than at most companies in Hawaii. Very top down leadership with personalities more important than quality results.

Enjoyed working there with patients and most of the staff

    Registered Nurse (Former Employee)

ProsThe benefits were great and reasonable for employees. The Medical Center provided special appreciation for employees during the Holidays.

ConsNurse managers mistreat the staff nurses and show favoritism regularly. Early comments on managers "habitually abusing the staff nurses" is factual. Management and leadership needed not be so dogmatic and rigid in their treatment of the staff nurses who work so hard. Rules and policies are provided as guidance and set standards for practice. Managers need to understand and know hospital policies as well as understand some of the local culture of the community of Hawaii.

Advice to Senior ManagementNursing Management Leadership at Queen's need more training on fairness and learn integrity, honesty and treat other employees with all fairness and respect.
