I worked at Quidel (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The technology was good. Many people there were good to work with.

    Cons

Only job option in that field in Athens, OH. Some managers/supervisors were not good at working with other people.

    Advice to Management

It is not always easy to do the right thing.

I worked at Quidel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Not good. Not bad. Ok if you are just looking for a job. Consider if you are will to work at a place that is in San Diego. That's not a bad thing. It has that going for it. San Diego has a diverse economy.

    Cons

NO real issues here. It's a job, not a career. So deal with it or look for something else that might be a whole lot more fulfilling. Have they finished anything and really delivered on revenue. Not really.

I worked at Quidel (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Flex hours. Personal appts and family balance is respected. Bene's are good.

    Cons

Very political. Upper/exec mgmt mainly hires based on "who you know" not "what you know". No ethnic diversity above hourly employees. Human resource and benefits personnel are brutal at times. Inside joke is they are unapproachable.

    Advice to Management

It's good to clean house every so often.

I have been working at Quidel full-time

    Pros

Great working environment, co-workers are friendly and supportive. Company values work life balance and provides a supportive work environment. Emphasis on new products which gives the company a healthy pipeline of new products to market. Established company with good growth rate.

    Cons

Projects could be managed better. Sometimes important tasks are missed and slow down overall progress. Stress team environment. Don't work in silos.

    Advice to Management

Value the employees. They add to the bottom line.

I have been working at Quidel (More than a year)

    Pros

The work environment is wonderful. There are different campuses and some are smaller than others, but the people you work with directly (at the same level as you) are wonderful and extremely helpful. There's definitely a mix of people in managerial positions. If you are lucky enough to work with a good manager/director, it will make your job so much better. Its a great place to get your foot in the industry door.

    Cons

Some of the managers are amazing, but if you work with one of the bad ones it can really ruin your whole experience. Some of the managers don't know what they are doing and its up to you to figure things out. Also, compensation at the company is really poor, and there's not much room for growth. There's not a whole lot of room for growth, especially if you are a scientist, but its a good place to start a career in industry.

    Advice to Management

Pay people what they deserve and you might be able to retain some of the good talent you hire, and give them the opportunity to succeed and move up.

    Pros

Decent benefits. Flexible work hours. If you just want to keep a low-profile and just earn a paycheck it's fine. Considerate of flexibility for people with kids.

    Cons

Quidel is run on a good old boy system. From executive through middle-management. Unless you're in with the right group you will not be promoted or recognized. You have to know somebody to get promotions or good pay increases. People do not move up through excellent performance. Very incompetent people are in leadership positions because of who they know. HR is unprofessional and very harsh. Sometimes unbelievable. They are like bullies. Definitely not trustworthy. Because of all this there are true leaders and excellent performers in the background making things work daily but never get promoted or good pay increases. It's not a happy environment. But whoever said that HR was a group you could trust and that work is supposed to be a happy place.....

    Advice to Management

Money is always the bottom line. You're all there to make money. And that's okay. But Someday you might stop and look deep within yourself and find out who you really are. Try it.

    Pros

Co-workers are intelligent and pleasant to work with.

    Cons

Company does not care about their employees or value them; knows they pay below the average for the area and still don't give raises.

    Advice to Management

Too many managers on a single project...

Good degree of flexibility, management open to good and novel suggestions

    Cons

Little room for growth, and upward mobility. Do not compensate on merit or hard work, incremental increase in salary, no profit sharing except for management

    Advice to Management

Need to reward employees for their hard work and inventions

    Pros

The people that work there are great and reliable.

    Cons

The management lacks communication and does not give enough to their employees for the hard work they do.

    Advice to Management

Pay the employees more and work on better company wide communication.

I worked at Quidel full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Nice town to live in

    Cons

Little prospect for advancement. The good jobs are held by young, incompetent legacy employees. They aren't leaving any time soon. Only job prospect in town except for really crappy jobs at the university Seriously inept management. R+D department destroyed by in-fighting and general incompetence Medical diagnostics is a dead end career. The skills that you gain don't translate to other industries. Very abusive management unrestrained by HR or upper management.

    Advice to Management

Show some actual leadership and do the right thing for once. The right thing isn't always easy.
