Pros
Quiksilver is a great company to work for. Many have left for other opportunities but usually end up coming back, as I did. The people and the work environment are tough to beat.
Cons
Sometimes the corporate leaders make you feel a little powerless. There has also been much shuffling in the retail division of corporate and the turnover rate seems to be high.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep the company's roots strong, because that's what makes people love working for Quiksilver. Make smarted investment choices and listen to the retail employees. They have some pretty good ideas.
Pros
-Passionate and exciting group of people
-Friendly management that cares about the team
-Amazing products
-Excellent discount on merchandise
-A sense of pride and solidarity throughout entire company
Cons
-Many of the upper business decisions made are re-active, rather than being proactive.
-Constant attempts to break into new markets rather than excelling and the ones we currently have
-People at home office are stretched so thin that they are often set up for failure
-There are many people at home office who are letting the stores and the entire company down and who answer to no one
Advice to Senior Management
Make sure that you are doing a better job communicating with the stores and understanding their struggles and successes. Don't dictate that policy xyz is going to be a success when any person on the front lines can tell you that won't work.
Pros
Usually a fun group of people to work with. Fairly laid back but respectable environment. Management was flexible with scheduling.
Cons
Usually a little to lax in the employee responsibility department. It is a retail job, you are going to work with some people who do not want to interact with customers at all.
Pros
it's a very relaxed, casual environment, everyone is friendly and kicked back in general
Cons
years could be passed and you realize you're still doing the same thing even though you are getting great feedback from managers
Advice to Senior Management
need a better promotion/reward system
Pros
I worked here for almost four years and it was the most awesome four years ever. It was so much fun, the people are awesome.
Cons
the pay could be higher
Advice to Senior Management
recognize more those at the bottom. they are the face of your company.
Pros
Young staff likes to have fun, parties, skateboard ramp.
Future employers see Quiksilver on resume and are easily impressed.
Cons
Young staff is immature and corporate office feels like high school with popular kids and bullies.
Many late nights and weekends. No compensation for overtime, not even old fit samples which other fashion houses give away.
Couldn't take accrued vacation time during slowest time of year, told I'd be risking my job if I wanted to take 1 week off!
Department managers supported and participated in gossip and bad mouthing other employees, creating bad working environment!
Advice to Senior Management
Critique managers of each department for ability to lead people. Send designers turned managers to management classes so they know how to treat people. So they know how to help them grow.
Pros
Surf, little work, fun job
Cons
Low pay, boring after a few months, lack of employee development
Advice to Senior Management
Start a real company
Pros
Surfing atmosphere, cool clothing, usually fun employees.
Cons
Job Security, little to no hours, equaling little to no pay.
Pros
good work environment and friendly staff. pretty relaxed atmosphere, most employees surf during lunch break and located in a great location.
Cons
didnt see much upward movement in the company. everyone was really relaxed which was nice but it seemed like there wasn't much direction.
Advice to Senior Management
Limit the number of VPs and managers. there needs to be more direction in the company to be more efficient
Pros
Great job.
fun environment
fun coworkers
good discounts
Cons
Having to do things just because there is nothing to do. Like sweep when I just finished sweeping
Advice to Senior Management
give better discounts and help employees progress
