Skill development opportunity, great perks and flexible working hours.
Cons
Base salary range from ocean to mountain and folks at the ocean level were affected by many lately applied policies.

Review the base salary for the folks at the ocean level before you lose them.

Every move you make all day everyday is monitored and measured (call length, offering every product, how long between calls, how call flow went, breaks are measured to the second and tardies are the most common problem to get fired for)

The work is challenging. Many changes are occurring in the industry impacting our area of knowledge which is BSS-Billing Support Systems.

Pension and health care plans have changed considerably while I have worked at Qwest.

Overall, IT management appears focused on the tasks at hand to provide value to the business. Many changes have occurred over the last 5 years to our work area

-Superior skills and experience of the employees supporting the Network.
-Corporate focus and support to support & deploy emerging technologies.
-Passionate and dedicated workforce and leadership team.
Cons
For the employees in the former US West region, it has been an attractive acquisition target (Qwest, now CenturyLink), so as an employee, having to readjust the workforce and change systems and processes can be very difficult during the transformation.
Advice to Senior Management
Invest time at the senior management level speaking to front line employees and management to identify where the strong & talented leaders are within the organizations...Then remove, or reassign to a non-manager role, the weak/ineffective leaders.

Also, the people that work their are talented, hard working, and smart (for the most part).

Resources are Lean...there's not fat left to cut and most people are doing the work of several people...creates a all work and no play environment. Very rarely is there time to step away from your desk to even have lunch.

The quality technical talent that was in the old !NTERPrise group.
Finally figured out that the Internet was important for the future.

Old management culture is very resistant to change.
Outsourcing strategy by IT was just STUPID!
Take over by telophony side of IT impedes speed to market.

Get managers who are flexible and care about their employees. Listen to their ideas - stop the Directors who protect their own asses.

1) In-house processes are best known to veterans who don't have much time to make you understand (appears as reluctance and unwillingness when higher management doesn't have clear-cut role definitions for middle and upper level management)
2) Lack of motivation

1) If you want to set example, be that example. That is one good way of motivating folks to surpass their capabilities.
2) Motivate employees in more than one good way...you never know which thing clicks with who.
3) If you want compliance with process models, have clear role definitions for all hierarchies - this will enable person to focus more on personal and professional development
