I worked at R.R. Donnelley full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Honestly, can't think of many positive aspects, even if trying to be fair. Some good people there, but mostly the younger ones who haven't been tainted yet and don't have enough (or any) experience outside RRD to know better. In many respects, the company is very well run. It is largely successful, lean, and back-office functions are solid. That comes at the expense of high-turnover from a churn-em and burn-em mentality. They are willing to fire people, and entire departments, if they are too vocal and not aligned with management.

    Cons

Benefits are horrible, getting worse year over year, even when company does well. Mid to upper management largely worked their way up by being rubber-stamps to those above. The clique mentality is so strong that if you are not in, you're out... way out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No point advising management from anonymous post. They believe they are golden and are arrogant beyond belief.

I worked at R.R. Donnelley full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

One would think this being a fortune 500 company but, not at all so.

    Cons

Very unorganized, unprofessional. Management often hides until they come out looking to harass or fire someone. Management can't help the newest of employees. terrible communication. This plant has a HUGE turn over. They are always hiring. In a short time employees are used and abused and bring on another one. Long 12 hour shifts. Terrible environment with people, management, way to hot in the summer, fans with extension cords all over just blowing hot air around. In the winter you will need to wear a jacket. Advancement is reserved for friends of management. This is a waste of time. If you wish to grow with a company, it won't happen here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Disconnect from lower and upper management selling them that all is wonderful.

I have been working at R.R. Donnelley full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    Forward thinking leadership
    Nice office atmosphere (Corporate)
Turnover/acquiaitions provides frequent opportunities for diversity

    Cons

Below standard salaries across the board
Health Benefits as poor as industry offers
HR support is very inconsistent but generally quite poor
No financial benefits, although 401K is mentioned as possible but hasn't been restored for years

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I am in management with the company and I understand that the poor profit margain of most services leads to running very lean operations. You could pay people their market value but hurt the company or you can pay them what you can get away with and hurt the employees. The only answer is to transition the company to services that support greater benefits to the employees

I have been working at R.R. Donnelley full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Giant company with some opportunities if you have drive and ambition. I personally worked with great management and highly skilled co-workers. Working from home and flexible work schedules for IT workers are a huge plus. RR Donnelley has implemented a number of community service programs through the company inclusion council. The company is growing through acquisition and attempting move into high growth areas to offset the decline in traditional ink on paper.

    Cons

I've been at the company 7+ years. I have seen the pension frozen, 401K match taken away, no training, little to no raises, benefits costs rising. Every little perk has been taken away in order to "cut costs" and please shareholders. Everyone, even top performers, are treated pretty much the same. I don't see this pattern changing going forward.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I will agree with some of the other reviews that this "used to be a good place to work - not now" from a benefits and compensation perspective. Employees will leave if RR Donnelley doesn't match what the rest of the market is doing as far as compensation.

I have been working at R.R. Donnelley full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Pay is better than most CSR jobs. Salary employees have flexibility in schedule. The work is not difficult at all.

    Cons

Management is not around unless they have bad news or you are in trouble. There is favoritism for senior employees that disrespect others and get away with it. Worst part of this place is the coworkers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show more appreciation to your employees. There are quite a few bad weeds that need to be pulled to help the company grow.

I worked at R.R. Donnelley full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

As a computer programmer, the pay was fair, but the culture was very supportive and professional. The people I worked with were all very personable and respectful. Training was hands-on with a seasoned veteran. Standard Operating Procedures were clearly spelled out, and acknowledged mistakes were generally forgiven. Telecommuting was supported. Best place I ever worked.

    Cons

Work ebbed and flowed, sometimes it was very slow and then the challenge was to stay productive with billable hours even if those hours weren't there. Other times we'd get slammed and the expectation was to make the deadline even if it took 60-80 hours a week, but such workloads were rare. Application support often entailed taking phone calls at 2am, and over weekends.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Extend the professional atmosphere from the white-collar jobs to the blue-collar jobs if you want to produce a higher-quality product.
