They may not be perfect...but pretty close

    Parts Manager (Former Employee)

ProsA company that is willing to develop their employees. They really take care to train. Lots of growth. RDO is a private company with strong core values from top management all the way down to the hourly positions.

ConsHealth package is not the greatest. And bonuses can be small.

    Political, not employee friendly

    Maintenance (Former Employee)
    Minot, ND

    ProsDecent benefits, not much else

ConsExtremely political climate, growth only possible by kissing up even if you are the best at your job.

Management (General Manager - Parts Manager - Service Manager)

    Management (Former Employee)
    Tucson, AZ

ProsGreat product line and Training & Benefits.

ConsBack stabbing origination. Management position not lasting more than 5 to 6 years in Tucson. Customers loose confidence in the organization with such high turnover. Learn what you can from RDO and take it to another organization and use it to better your self. Do not believe that they have an open door policy because they don't.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon’t believe you can fix a problem at a store location by loosing or terminating managers. The trouble maker employees still remain and continue to infect others in the store and problems will show its ugly head again long after you loose or terminate good managers.

    "Great Place to Work"

    Service Department (Former Employee)
    Riverside, CA

ProsGood pay for both hourly and Salaried Employees. A lot of opportunity for advancing your education in the field you have chosen. Decent Benefits and retirement.

ConsNo time given to further your education. Short career span and a very high turnover rate for supervisors and middle management. Lack of resources needed to complete the job correctly. Too much red tape.

Advice to Senior ManagementSlow down a litlle bit . Try not to focus on hitting the budget so much as building quality long term relationships with both employees and customers.

RDO Equipment Co. is a Great Place to Work.

    Midwest Sales (Current Employee)
    Fargo, ND

ProsUpper Management is always trying to make the employees better satisfied.
Pay is good as long as you perform, and the market does well.
Most of magement and owners seem to care about the employees.
They try not to lay off people when the economy is bad.

ConsManagement trys to do to much with in house computer programs and people. They make the jobs much more difficult trying to make an easy job difficult with technology.
While it is important to watch inventory control and documentation of policies, to much power is given to Auditors. They keep all employees scared of them, including managment.
I would suggest a good corporate book I have read called "The Trust Factor".

Advice to Senior ManagementI would suggest a good corporate book I have read called The Trust Factor: Liberating Profits & Restoring Corporate Vitality . It explains how trusting people to do there job is a lot less expensive than trying to police all the jobs and activities. A good example is where one of the store managers was caught stealing a new riding lawnmower, cost approximately $5000.00. Then the Auditing Dept. was started. The costs of the Auditing Dept is close to $500,000.00 per year. That comes out to an awful lot of stolen product and making people feel like thieves or incompetents.
Also the IT Dept. has gotten huge and very expensive, things need to be kept simple to run smoothly.

Not so Great Place To Work

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsCompany pays their employees very well, profit sharing bonuses, and 401K matching. Also supply employees with the best tooling and equipment possible to complete their required task and duties.

ConsThey do not appreciate employees and managers that dedicate their lives to take care of the customers and the company. There are a lot of politics and strong Good Old Boy network structure. You get promoted on who you know, not what you do for the company. All the good employees were forced out. This is not a company to establish a long career.

Advice to Senior ManagementOnly Jesus walks on water.

Good company in an up market.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThe employee group is very talented and fun. The benefits are good.

ConsWhen the economy slowed it was all hands off deck. The company went into survival mode and got rid of everyone. Some departments were reduced 80%. The corporate culture was destroyed and many good people with 10+ years of loyal service were shown the door with six weeks severance pay. Pay is below industry standard.

Advice to Senior ManagementSome of your directors need to learn some leadership skills (not management skills). An employee will work harder for a manager that inspires them than a bigger paycheck. Your company doesn't offer either (with some select exceptions). Upper management is strong it is the middle management that is very weak.
