    Honest, Hard-Working, Fun, Focused

    Manager (Current Employee) Sterling, VA

Pros- If you are good at what you do, you will be recognized and rewarded
    - Upper management is getting better at identifying the issues, problems and making every effort to solve it
    - So many initiatives have been taken in the last year to make an employee feel appreciated and recognized
    - Lot's of fun while working
    - Upper management is very open to hearing feedback (positive and negative)
    - Have been with the company for 5 years and not a single day has passed where I feel under-appreciated
    - Flexible working hours

Cons- Few managers are not good people managers, but the upper management is taking strict action and making it their priority for 2014

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep doing what you are, I have seen a HUGE difference in the last year, identifying the problems and focusing on solving them. Definitely moving in the right direction.

    Company that cares

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

Pros1. Executive team always willing to listen and learn

    2. The company is willing to make changes based on market needs

    3. Focused career tracks for technology and management cadres

    4. Great benefits package. (They just made great changes to the professional development hours, health and annual leave benefits package)

    5. World class facility with great amenities

Cons1. Lack of core working hours, so that folks can plan their daily activities better

    2. Staggered vesting of 401K benefits. It would be nice to have benefits 100% vested in capital markets from day one of enrollment

Advice to Senior ManagementMore focus on increasing REI's brand awareness in the Federal government sector

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

They Make Commitments They Don't Intend to Keep

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Sterling, VA

Pros1. Utmost job security for non-performers
    2. High focus on keeping employees happy irrespective of their performance - detrimental to high performing resources
    3. CEO has all the right intentions of looking after employee welfare - always has employees' best interest in mind

Cons1. Incompetent senior and mid-level management - right from COO to line level managers
    2. Persistent record of absolute distrust for external hires - employees who have been with REI for long have a habit of keeping things close to themselves while making relatively newer external hires look incompetent
    3. Record of flouting all terms and conditions that were negotiated after an employee is hired
    4. Strong performers are few and far between - high performers are odd people out in the environment
    5. Strong resistance to evolution of the culture to remain relevant in the industry
    6. Lack of accountability on part of senior and mid-level management
    7. Very theoritical/bookish management styles adopted by leaders/managers - focus is not on tangible results
    8. Leadership lacks capability to drive and manage large portfolio
    9. Close knit fraternity of old timers look down upon newer external hires and their experience - sign of disrespect and arrogance - not a healthy environment for new hires

Advice to Senior Management1. Accountability should start from top -- from COO level
    2. Risk losing high performance if non-performers are not held accountable
    3. Management shake up with a mix of experienced external hires with proven credentials has the potential of opening new avenues of growth for REI - complete reliance on long-term tenured staff resulting in stagnation
    4. CEO and CIO need to dig deeper into the underlying issues - not sure if they are being fed the right information about the root cause of either loss of business or lack of new business growth
    5. Invest in skills and capabilities which are relevant in the current industry - past laurels are not relevant any longer - technology company is as good as their capabilities that are relevant today
    6. Resources being promoted to managers and leaders just due to their satisfactory spoken english skills has to stop - it drives away capable resources
    7. Please do not hire people from outside if you don't have respect for their experience and skills - no one has the right to ruin someone's career

Love the positive changes + professional development

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Sterling, VA

ProsFocus on employee development and communication is very good. Based on employee feedback in executive town-hall meets, they brought many good changes. Benefits are better, vacation days are added, professional development hours. Very positive changes.

ConsNeed more focus on latest technology and innovation. Work from home priveleges difficult to get. I wish there was public transport and better food choices closeby

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the focus on employees. More Happy Hours?

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Not Fair

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsSenior Management is caring. Some employees are very good and care about what they do. Benefits are good.

ConsManagers say "Yes" to everything customer ask for and then scramble the team to work crazy hours. Learn to manage work and set right expectations.

Don't expect the managers to be fair. If you work normal 8 hours a day and open to work extra even after hours, managers will exploit you and you will never get appreciation.

If you come 11 am in morning, take 2 hour lunches, head home at 5, the managers will reward you with bonuses to make you happy so that you are more productive and begin to be open to working more.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou can't improve existing managers. Hire some better ones.

    Worst Managers ever!!

Software Delivery/QA (Current Employee) Sterling, VA

    ProsDecent benefits.
Federal govt projects,so gives you stability

ConsThis place is good for people who don't mind being bullied by Managers.People who have stayed 10 + years in the firm have all grown up the hierarchy and become Managers. Most of them are not proficient enough in English(verbal or written)managers have 0 Managerial skills and extremely poor soft skills.they could yell at any subordinates every other day for silly reasons. There is no process and Manager changes/manipulates the process as per his wish .This is RIDICULOUS and need to stop in case you want to save old employees.

REI is very could at giving loft designations verbally and make you slog to their utmost potential..However that position will never come to you on paper...

Senior Management does not take any action against these monstrous Managers who actually could suck up all your blood...!!

Advice to Senior ManagementTake action on your Managers...they are honestly not up to the mark

ProsThe company treats employees like family! Employee development focused! Flat organization structure lends to easy access to Senior Management.

ConsThe company needs to diversify its business more! The budget constraint in the federal government is impacting the growth of this mid sized company!

    Great place to work!!

Business Analyst (Current Employee) Herndon, VA

Pros- Family friendly company: flexibility enables those with family to work hard but spent time with family
    - Competitive salary
    - Amazing coworkers
    - Management cares about employees.

Cons- Company grew too fast leaving behind management growth. Fortunately, they are getting their acts together.
    - Unless you are focus on a career path, you can be thrown around in different roles which may affect your career. On the flip side, being thrown into various roles increase one's knowledge in different areas and overall increase your career outlook in a big picture.

    Good Stepping Stone

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsMost of the people are good people to work with and are rather intelligent.

ConsManagement at the program manager level is horrible. Make ridiculous commitments to customers for which the engineers have to break their backs to meet. When these ridiculous commitments are actually met, who is rewarded for it? The managers....not the engineers are rewarded for meeting these goals.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake care of your engineers! They are the ones that actually do the work....not the managers.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
