I have been working at RFMD full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great place to work with lots of great people. I feel that my contributions are genuinely appreciated and that I'm actually being allowed to make a real difference.

    Cons

Salaries are not particularly good but OK. Health care plan is somewhat underwhelming. The bureaucracy can be a bit of a pain but overall there's really not very much to complain about.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are some people in administrative positions who should not be trusted with the power that comes with their positions. Get rid of these people before the cause the company some real damage...

I have been working at RFMD (more than 10 years)

    Pros

RFMD has decent benefits for a company its size. There are some dedicated, hardworking people who want to see the company continue to be successful. The cafeteria in the corporate building is ok.

    Cons

It feels like there are two different companies....Corporate and everybody else. The culture that Corporate talks about is NOT the culture that exists in the rest of the company. There are no opportunities to move into other roles unless you are "connected" with the right people. It seems like the same people get promoted. Several managers in the Manufacturing area are terrible leaders, and only hear their own voices. This continues to kill morale, and causes employees not to do their best work. The multiple layoffs over the years has created a level of distrust.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote employees based on talent, skill, and contribution, and not on friendship, or if the person "looks like you".

I have been working at RFMD full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

NC has good weather, RFMD is a growing company with opportunity

    Cons

Poor comunication from mid managers and below. Priorities are not well documented (written goals) and shift frequently. Little face time with your manager. Communication tends to be email centric. Reviews are not based on goals and results but your managers opinion. Decisions rarely have significant input from the people who have to implement the decision and tends to be made by managers who are without expertise for that area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus and prioritize on the truly important. Written goals that connect all the way up from individual to group to department to business group to corporate would help as would more hands on communication with direct reports. Management spends way too much time in meetings.

I worked at RFMD as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Hand on work and a very helpful team. A very relaxed work environment.

    Cons

Not a lot of interaction with other interns.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A more structured internship program will prove to be very helpful for incoming entry level engineers.

    Pros

People were very good to work with. Good infrastructure and they equipped you well in the lab.

    Cons

Raises were usually small. Bonus structure was not very competitive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Begin a more competitive bonus structure all the way to the bottom. At annual reviews give options or restricted stock as incentive to stay.

I have been working at RFMD full-time

    Pros

Benefits are generally good but have dwindled over the last five years, 2-2-3 schedule is great for planning time off. Work environment is comfortable and not overtaxing physically. Some great people to work with.

    Cons

Quite a bit of disparity between groups based on who your supervisor is. Some get free reign while others are micro managed. Fab managers completely disconnected with this, After multiple layoffs in recent years no one is sure what it takes to ensure their jobs when the next one hits, Bonuses and raises are ridiculously small even though the company makes record profits and growing margins. Review system is out dated and does not reflect actual performance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Share the wealth. Reward dedication and push for equal treatment of all employees at similar job levels.

I worked at RFMD full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great place for a fresh graduate to gain experience in design and manufacturing. Opportunity to switch between groups if you get bored working in one area. Talented folks have left to competitors during several round of lay-offs in the last decade, which would mean it is a good opportunity to establish yourself and move up the rank.

    Cons

Talented folks have left to competitors during several round of lay-offs in the last decade. Management decided to invest in several areas and then discontinue abruptly. Excessive spending on R&D with minimal results.
