Pros
Good job overall, especially enjoyed the team atmosphere.
Cons
Average pay. Requires some heavy lifting.
Advice to Senior Management
Present your skills honestly. Do not over sell or undersell your abilities.
Pros
I liked most of the people I worked with. The pay was half decent in comparison to other retail establishments in my area.
Cons
My main complaint was that of my store manager's complete and udder lack of management capabilities. Especially when it came to dealing with employees.
Advice to Senior Management
Employees need training in their departments. Although management needs training in customer service and merchandising, the greatest need is in human resources education.
Pros
It is good as a part time job for while your are going to school. Good fellow employees to work with.
Cons
The managers are incompetent and have no idea of how the store should be run. The pay is bad and will not increase much.
Advice to Senior Management
Actually try doing the jobs of the employees before you criticize their work efficiency. Stop spending all your time on the computer looking at craigslist.
Pros
- It pays above average for hourly waged workers in comparison to other retailers. Store management was paid average to the industry
- The bonus program can be generous on an average to good year for management.
- A very good online product knowledge training program
- The benefits program is above average for the industry
- Once a year, the CEO visit each province to speak with all the staff at one of the major cities.
- Due to the nature of the business, Christmas time is very relaxed unlike other retailers.
- Opportunity for store management team to be entrepreneur by making decision that can positively affect the store's P&L
Cons
- Old style management. Very unsophisticated.
- Questionable HR practices. Managers were not able to find written HR policies and procedures to guide them in their decision making
- District manager and up only speaks with the store manager and assistant store manager when they visit.
- Due to its rapid expansion over the last 10 years, the company has a mishmash IT system, which can be frustrating to navigate. However in fairness, within 2 years or so, there will be a major upgrade across the board
- Needs improvement on work life balance. Managers work stupid and long hours some times.
- Summer is very hectic and hard to get time off
Advice to Senior Management
- The district manager needs to communicate more with staff below the Store Manager and Assistant Store Manager level.
- More sophisticated policies and procedures. It feels like lots of decisions are made on the fly.
Pros
The pay isn't too bad for part time work and when there is stuff to do the job can be enjoyable. They were pretty flexible when it came to allowing for time off. As long as ample warning was given, you are pretty much guarunteed the day off if part time. Most of the full time staff seem to genuinely enjoy working there, some of them even too much so. Overall if you are looking for part time work after school or on weekends it is a fairly decent job. It definately isn't somewhere I would want to work full time though.
Cons
When there is little to do time can drag on and you don't feel like it is really worth being there.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep policy simple. Don't harp on the details.
