Supportive environment with great people

Senior Account Executive (Former Employee)
Santa Monica, CA

I worked at RPA full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat people to work with, and they're great about work/life balance. You can tell it's important to the company culture. Summer Fridays help the employees mingle and meet, and the teams individually also make sure to have some fun.

ConsNo real cons, other than the parking situation. You have to pay to park in the lot below the building. it gets deducted from your salary automatically, but it's annoying to think you have to pay to come to work.

wonderful company - with changes afoot

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Santa Monica, CA

I have been working at RPA full-time

Prosgood people, good intentions, openness to new directions and ideas

Constransition in leadership/vision/identify ... but this will be a good thing ultimately.

Advice to Senior Managementneed more clarity of hierarchy/who's in charge/ vision/ priorities (I think they are working toward this - which is a good thing)

Good place to work if you're passionate about advertising and willing to go beyond call of duty.

Intern (Former Employee)
Santa Monica, CA

I worked at RPA as an intern for more than a year

Pros-Fun and friendly work environment
-Opportunity to take on varied work load
-Great location in Santa Monica, CA, very near the beach

-Pay structure is disadvantageous to entry-level employees

Left wanting more

Junior Copywriter (Former Employee)
Santa Monica, CA

I worked at RPA full-time for more than a year

ProsWork/Life Balance - can have a life outside of work, did not have to work late nights/weekends very often.

ConsWork - is nothing special. Very conservative clients, very safe work. No one fights for good ideas either. Once clients want changes, you have to make your work much more dull.

Upward Mobility - a big agency, so it's very hard to move up/get exciting projects. Usually reserved for senior creatives/creative directors.

Overall, this agency is not a major player in the ad world. Does not make cutting-edge, award-winning work, is not in the conversation when exciting ad agencies are mentioned. The very definition of doing your job during the day, then spending your nights and weekends doing what you really want to do.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake more risks.

Steady As She Goes

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Santa Monica, CA

I worked at RPA full-time for more than 3 years

ProsDue to size and structure of the agency, there was a decent opportunity to touch all the clients through all the phases of the work if you wanted. The agency's expertise in traditional advertising for an automotive company was both its strength and its weakness. RPA was always aggressive about pitching and acquiring new business, which ultimately helped stabilize the agency after the American Honda review in 2012/2013.

ConsAgency management was slow to embrace the inevitability of interactive advertising. For those staffers with more of an interest or skill in the digital spaces, it was often a very long and painful climb. The creative possibilities of digital experiences were generally dismissed in favor of the standard broadcast solution.

Great Company, Great Learning Experience

Intern (Current Employee)
Santa Monica, CA

I have been working at RPA as an intern for less than a year

ProsYou get out what you put in. If you put in a lot of effort, you'll learn A LOT and be exposed to a lot of the operations and your manager will teach you.

ConsLow pay....that's typical for the entertainment industry though.
Very slow paced at first...

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more involved and check in with your employees more. My department head will say "Hi" first thing in the morning and that's the last I see of that person all day.

Recovering from a loss in the wrong way

Account Management (Current Employee)
Santa Monica, CA

I have been working at RPA full-time for more than a year

ProsThey have big brands, so this is a great place to be a creative freelancer to build their portfolios. There are some absolute gems of people that work here-- you just have to find them and reach out to them early on.

ConsThe company has recently gone through a shift (publicized in advertising publications, so it's not a secret) where it has lost a large chunk of business. Outwardly it attempts to pivot by positioning itself as a creative agency, but there has been no infrastructure change to retain or reward the mid-to-lower level talent.

Advice to Senior ManagementInstead of promoting the VP-level employees, hire a lower-level employee. They carry the brunt of the work anyway...

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

EGOS live here!

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Santa Monica, CA

I worked at RPA full-time for more than a year

ProsSome nice staff members...trapped in the agency world
Decent work hours
Great location

ConsThis place is uber-political and if you don't constantly tell senior management how brilliant they are...you're persona non grata. Don't even think about having a different, albeit better idea than them...it won't happen! Ego, Ego, Ego.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry some humility once in a while...modesty goes much further than arrogance and ego. Try it some time!

Good for retirement.

Creative (Former Employee)
Santa Monica, CA

I worked at RPA full-time for more than 8 years

ProsDecent work/life balance. People are generally nice here.

ConsCliquey culture, lots of inner circles.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn to keep your jr—mid associates, and groom them into management status instead of hiring someone else outside of the agency. Give people more opportunities if they show the desire of wanting to help instead of shy away from their requests.
