    Pros

Work culture was friendly and supportive, very conducive to close teamwork. The projects were satisfying, as the work in my department focused on renewable energy. Everyone was focused on producing top-quality work, but there was no pressure to put in excessive time on weekends or outside office hours.

    Cons

It took a long time for servers and software to be upgraded. Also, there was not too much room for innovation because of the company size.

    Advice to Management

My immediate supervisiors were exellent at communicating project needs and allocating resources. However, it would have been beneficial if some managers further up the hierarchy had checked in on us more and gotten a better understanding of the day-to-day needs of our department.

  6. RPS Group acquires companies and then works hard to squeeze every possible billable hour without cutting into margins.

    Pros

Mostly given autonomy to run projects without any real direct oversight from senior management. Work with large and reputable clients so great exposure within industry.

    Cons

The only direct impact to projects senior management chooses to engage in is limiting overtime for staff and cutting training programs. Team members are paid poorly and project managers have no authority to provide pay incentives. The only way to receive an increase in pay is to leverage an employment offer from another company. If a voluntary raise is issued its negligible at best.

    Advice to Management

Management continually states that they are a people business and their people are the most important thing in their business. This is however meaningless rhetoric. If your people are your most value asset, retention of those people should be seen as a key initiative. Providing appropriate raises, allowing for overtime, issuing performance bonuses and providing proper training would more closely align with the given rhetoric.

    Pros

Great variety of projects from small local developments to national infrastructure projects. Reasonably good training opportunities, good perks such as cycle to work scheme, excellent share save scheme, ability to buy extra holidays, flexible working. Good social atmosphere, often 2-3 company social events paid for per year.

    Cons

Pay is not great. Investment in IT is very uneven - some people will be given brand new laptops on starting, others will get an old hand-me-down desktop with an old monitor that then doesn't get replaced for years. Policy of shared network licences for various programs rather than individual licenses means that often you can't use a program just whenever you want to. Technicians and junior/non-client facing staff are often undervalued.

    Advice to Management

Remove the secrecy around pay and reintroduce proper transparent payscales. Now that the market has recovered, new graduates are being recruited on higher salaries than people that have been there for 3 or 4 years. Morale around pay is terrible.

    Pros

The people that work there are great. Involved in some interesting projects projects and are established consultants in Scotland.

    Cons

Little to no training. No career development. Lack of resources for working towards professional accreditations (C.Eng, C.Sci etc.). Poor base salary couple with lack of opportunities leads to a stagnating workforce and career. Also, RPS Water act as basically a separate company to the RPS Group as a whole - zero integration and knowledge sharing.

    Advice to Management

Better integration with the rest of the company. More opportunities to develop and learn skills from other projects. Pay at least a competitive salary for Graduates and other professionals as opposed to taking advantage of over qualified professionals in need of work within the industry - both underpaying/under valuing them and robbing graduates of positions.
