Good employer

Project Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at RSA Group full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGood culture and team work across all sites in the UK. They are investing in staff development more-so now, and are modernizing somewhat with the use of social networks externally and internally. I worked for RSA in the UK for 7 years and did enjoy my job. There is a reason they rate highly in the 'Best (big) Companies to work for' in 2012,13 . They are really supportive to any personal issues you may have ie long term sick, etc Good HR department. Reasonable benefits (insurance staff discount, pensions, sharebuild )

ConsThe usual office politics.
The structure needs sorting out - as in team structure - some areas have vast amounts of contractors, when there are internally great staff that can do the work . I think they sometimes struggle to realise this. This could be true of any large employer though.

Advice to Senior ManagementFollow through on what you say you will do. Some great developments , but still needs work .

Good work life balance, but chaos is king

Pricing Analyst (Former Employee)
Horsham, England (UK)

I worked at RSA Group full-time for more than 3 years

Pros- Great work life balance (flexible working, flexidays, no long hours/being seen culture)
- Some genuinely good and interesting people, the odd ego but far less than seen at competitors
- Intelligent colleagues who genuinely know what they're talking about, not bluffing
- Dress down in non customer facing roles
- Pay seems to be slightly above industry average for similar roles/location

Cons- Lots of reshuffles across the business with a complicated management structure
- Lack of willing to really innovate
- Unsuitable people being promoted who aren't up to the job but just left to carry on
- Some poor computer systems
- Senior management plough ahead with ideas despite being given evidence that they aren't good ideas
- Some VERY bitter people
- Direction and priorities seem to change too much and incoherently leaving a lot of people bewildered
- No idea what the company's direction and strategy actually is, beyond the usual "Be the Best General Insurer" buzzphrase that all GIs use
- Lots of consultants coming in to do jobs that internal people could and would like to do

Advice to Senior Management- Listen to the people below you. Don't ask them for evidence of an idea and plough ahead with it regardless when you've been given evidence it makes no sense whatsoever

- Treat people consistently

- Reshuffles really make everyone a lot more angry than you realise. Ask if it's REALLY necessary

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Too many changes

Underwriting Consultant (Current Employee)

I have been working at RSA Group full-time for more than 3 years

ProsIt is a 300 year old company so has a good brand in the industry. Bonuses are great when the company is doing well.

ConsRSA does not value its employees. Recently laid off lots of people and many forced to retire early.

Advice to Senior ManagementValue those that have potential, not those that have been there for 30 years but do not know what they are doing.

Comfortable but frustrating at RSA UK

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
London, England (UK)

I have been working at RSA Group full-time for more than 8 years

ProsA family of friendly people and a healthy work life balance. Some senior leaders are trying to change the culture. Career wise, if your face fits, you'll do well, for many years.

ConsThe comfortable environment has led to a great deal of complacency. A comfy pair of slippers with a stifling risk averse attitude. Highly beauracratic and top down hierachal structure. Recent news worthy events have meant the best thing about RSA (satability) is no more.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to those in positions more junior than you - they can offer useful insights. Stop being afraid of the Executive Team - they need a bit of healthy challenge!

Not great . 5 managers in 6 years

Director of Claims (Former Employee)
Horsham, England (UK)

I worked at RSA Group full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGood technical approach and wide exposure to both personal and commercial areas of the business. Skill base is very experienced and technical

ConsOver analysis and takes too long to implement anything, the organisation structure is too beaurocratic. A lot of the staff are hanging on for their pension so its heavily biased to over 50 s compared to the competition

Advice to Senior ManagementBecome more agile and invest more in technology

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
