  1. Fun place, don't expect to progress far unless you're German

    Pros

Good atmosphere, flexible working allowed, travel encouraged, friendly relaxed people, London office is especially fun and team spirited, work is relatively easy and relaxed.

    Cons

If you want career progression look else where (for UK colleagues), salary increases are like unicorns. German colleagues get promotions over UK colleagues as standard (thanks to German working council and laws). German colleagues are very political and hierarchal. Too much bereaucracy and people hide behind processes.

    Advice to Management

Focus on change of attitude, not on process and empower staff at all levels. Too much working in silos still exists. Reward on merit, not on length of service and stop promoting unfairly i.e. German colleagues over UK colleagues who are more competent.

    Pros

Relaxed culture since away from the city of london, cheap to live in swindon if one gets london salaries

    Cons

Too many - it's like a large slow moving elephant in which changes takes months to occur and if certain wrong decisions are taken, they are not amended, instead people get political about it so they can point a finger at others later. Not sure if this was an experience within the risk group/ function I was a part of, or in general. But I realised most colleagues were either looking for other opportunities or dissatisfied with their experience. It is certainly a large utility but there is nothing German about their work culture. Even from a career development perspective, there is more lateral movement rather than upward movement. Not the right place for an aggressive individual who want to take on new opportunities. It's the right place for political individuals who want to shift blame and earn their daily bread and butter. Also some of the processes are far outdated, but employees care too little to fix. A very demotivated company to work in.

    Advice to Management

Have a downward focus to manage the group/ functions. A lot of information can be unearthed and utilised for crucial decision making. Get rid of hierarchy to create a flat organisation. This will enable higher efficiency and quick decision making.

    Pros

Package good. Good performance is genuinely well rewarded. Good sense of team, drive for achievement and excellence. Always new projects to get involved with and learn new things. Small enough to know a large proportion of people but big enough to allow development. Happy to pay for and generally supportive of training and development.

    Cons

Sometimes long hours. Disparity between front and back office rewards - to be expected though.

    Pros

they have some fantastic staff and is a very friendly place to work. In the right department you can do very well and develop your skills considerably.

    Cons

Can be bureaucratic and a bit political. Given the current state of the group, progression can be limited but they are all for training and development which is good so they are trying and moving in the right direction

    Advice to Management

cut the politics and get rid of the egos. Stop hiring so many ex consultants from mckinsey - they aren't always that good, apart from talking up themselves

    Pros

Probably not too bad for front office personnel. Fairly flexible for permanent employees.

    Cons

On the IT side, they couldn't decide on strategy. People found it hard to read trends in the IT area and very rarely liked to read between the lines. Strategy centred on German operations (may have changed since then). HR seemed to make questionable hiring decisions.

    Pros

RWEST employees are friendly intelligent people, the work was generally interesting and fast paced, I felt that I was always doing new things and always learning. The company offers very good benefits and a good working environment. They are willing to invest in people and treat staff well and fairly.

    Cons

RWEST increasingly felt like a tiny part of a much bigger company in a negative way. We lost the ability to make local changes and had to fall in line with the head office instructions. Personally, I also felt the ceiling had been reached in terms of my progression and leaving felt like the only option.
