I have been working at Rackspace

    Pros

Liberal Work Ethic. Laid back casual environment. Most of the lower level management are great to workers. Great place to learn technical skills.

    Cons

Rackspace has gotten to large and has lost its small company feel. Personal concern about front line employees is lacking. Stock options handed out to long time employees is a joke compared to other companies. Bonus structure is a joke, and is used to justify lower base salaries by recruiting. Rackspace seems more concerned with hiring to many non productive VP level management than productive employees. Technical support staff is underpaid compared to national averages.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rackspace runs on the backs of its technical staff not its leaders.

I have been working at Rackspace

    Pros

Unique business model, you want to work in IT and live in San Antonio, pockets of really good people

    Cons

They are very cheap about everything (salaries, equipment, office space, etc), the management about the people who actually do the work stinks, communication from upper management often is filled with lies and half truths, they are trying to offshore more and more stuff to India (especially software development), because they are cheap on salaries they often end up with people in positions they shouldn't be in (you scrape the bottom of the barrel and you often end up with bad employees), too many nontechnical people in technical positions, not enough strong technical people

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get real, grow up, find out what's really going on, do more than worry about cashing out by going public, value your technical people more, realize that some people are worth more and pay accordingly

    Pros

The people, there are great people working here.

    Cons

The leadership. They love to make wide sweeping decisions that cost a lot of money and add complexity to the way we do things.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Simplify.

The people are great to work with.

    Cons

It is growing way to fast.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start paying your employees what they are worth. stop listening to HR's 20% below everyone else mantra.

    I worked at Rackspace

    Pros

You work with lots of great folks, there's no shortage of challenging problems to tackle, you have access to fairly current tech, and the dress code is very casual. Open book meetings give you a pretty good read on where things are going, and management is very approachable.

    Cons

Management is done on the "squeaky wheel gets the grease" basis. If you're not bugging senior management constantly, you won't get support or credit for much.

It's very much an interrupt driven environment. Don't count on spending more than a couple of weeks working on a project before you get bumped to work on the latest emergency (and then get grilled as to why the original project isn't finished a week later).

You'll hear the phrases "But we're not a software development company" and "I'm not sure that's the best use of your time" quite a bit when talking about anything other than a project your supervisor has assigned to you. Other people are supposed to come up with the great ideas... your just supposed to code them up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You guys need to find someone familiar with software development to be a part of senior managment to help understand where things are going and what Rackspace needs to do to be ready for them. You also need to take risks and let your software devs off the leash every once in a while.

    I worked at Rackspace

    Pros

It is like working with a large, yet tight-knit family on very technical subject matter.

    Cons

It is like working with a large, yet tight-knit family on very technical subject matter, with other people who are not in your family, who don't know much about technical things, but you must act as if they are family and they do know what they are talking about. Also, the described subject matter, in reality, is not to true focus of the company. The company is about people - as much as that sounds like a cheesy platitude, it is fundemental to understand as it is a core cultural relevance point within Rackspace.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Nothing at this time.
