    Pros

Good starting salary, working hours are a cakewalk compared to other tech companies I worked for (some people work 9 to 5 with a 2+ hour lunch break).
Diverse bunch of people, mostly friendly.
Mix of social events at work: baby showers, birthday/holiday parties and catering, Warriors' games, company softball team.
They are flexible with vacation time, and let you borrow vacation days if you don't have them yet.

    Cons

Feedback (positive and negative) about job performance is not given very often, and it is sometimes hard to get a sense of how satisfied or not they are with your work.
Company grows quickly and projects/plans are modified frequently. A project that seemed important a few months ago can quickly lose relevance. A new project might suddenly spring up and becomes your priority.
There is some resistance to change from management.

    Advice to Management

Provide more constant feedback and communication to employees about their performance and the standards you expect from them. As the company grows, make sure employees don't waste time on projects that are later cancelled/changed. This would keep employees motivated and increase morale.

    Pros

The HQ located in Novato Marin county is one of the prettiest places in California.
    Fully stocked kitchen,comparable compensation.

    Cons

This company is the result of running tech business like it were a family business.

Its not the culture of the company, but the lack of it has resulted in many employees quitting the jobs within a few months of joining.

Very high levels of unprofessional behavior shown at all levels.

They would openly talk about getting people fired when asked for a day or two of vacation.
Not going write the details but there was definitely behavior that would be classified as Hostile environment to work.

Career growth is NOT based on Merit but on the ability to agree with them at all costs.

    Advice to Management

Transparency between upper level management and employees would be a good place to start.

Start treating employees more like people and less like commodity.

Include Behavioral training for employees, so there is less abuse of power and there are some established rules to abide by.

    Pros

    - Salaries are above average in nearly all departments, even for new hires with little experience.
    - Casual atmosphere: dress code, people are all pretty relaxed.
    - nice facilities, fully stocked kitchen.

    Cons

There is a strong sense of entitlement and a lack of discipline, especially in the Marketing department. For a startup company, this is surprising.

    A few examples of this:

    - people asking to work from home or calling in sick and going to Giants baseball games on these days.

    - complaints that the kitchen (which has fresh fruit/nuts/cookies you name it) doesn't stock enough organic products.

    - complaints that the company doesn't pay for the marketing department's happy hour tabs.

    - people using company time and money to develop their own business on the side.

    Advice to Management

Improve discipline and management in the Marketing department. Make sure that the emerging culture of entitlement stops, or more people will be discouraged. It is a shame because the company is innovative and has a strong product. Best of luck.

    Pros

The salaries, especially for people out of school with thin resumes, are pretty great. The environment/attire is casual, and lunch is regularly over an hour in many departments.

For most departments, when the 8:30-5:30 (ish) ends, you get to leave work at work and it won't follow you home.

    Cons

There's absolutely no sense of investment in employees. Your time is a commodity being bought, with no interest for your life happiness or job satisfaction, let alone to any sense of community or camaraderie among employees.

The company seems to change business strategy every two weeks, so it doesn't feel like it's worth working hard on what's in front of you, because it won't be relevant in a few days.

No stock options, no employer contribution to retirement savings.

    Advice to Management

Either make work a great place for employees to be ($300/month on a happy hour tab won't bankrupt the company), or let us work from home. Try asking us what we'd like. You've hired a bunch of smart people, so trust them to be smart.

Pick a plan and stick to it for months - not days - at a time. Pick a standard for conduct and work quality and apply it fairly across employees.

Grant options and/or make retirement contributions.

    Pros

There are plenty of chances to learn and practice your craft. I felt like I significantly improved my writing skills on the job. You are immediately asked to produce work that will be published.

The dress code is casual, and the workplace is pleasant. You can bring a small pet to your cubicle.

Colleagues are culturally diverse and generally helpful.

    Cons

The learning curve is steep if you do not have some background in IT. At first, you will definitely feel lost with all the new technical jargon. This can feel overwhelmingly complex at times.

    Advice to Management

Make sure that new non-technical hires are given training to get up to speed. This will allow them to contribute more effectively.

    Pros

    - Good compensation
    - Plenty of opportunities to learn new technology especially in the area of
    identity management and databases/directories.
    - Positive attitude between colleagues

    Cons

    - Requires one to travel often as most customers are in different states
    - Can be stressful at times depending on customer deployments
    - Long hours on some occasions

    Advice to Management

Keep evolving the directory server to ensure high quality and smoother product deployment. Take more feedback from testers and the SE team to help with product development.

    Pros

    - good benefits
    - friendly and diverse co-workers, pleasant atmosphere between co-workers
    - lot of freedom to do things your way as long as you produce results.
    - nice facilities: the new office is nice and swanky from the cubicles to the conference rooms and the awesome kitchen.

    Cons

    - long meetings sometimes drag on for too long
    - company can sometimes shift focus very swiftly, requiring you to work on something
entirely different from one week to the next.

    Advice to Management

Aside from shortening the meetings, try to get some of the more experienced
employees to help mentor the newer hires. This would help newcomers contribute
in a shorter amount of time.

    Pros

Local workplace in Marin. Most employees are friendly and helpful. Pay scale is above average for most jobs. Innovative problem-solving technology.

    Cons

Insults and foul language frequent by owner and partners. No employee reviews are provided, no clear direction given to employees, frequent personal attacks are used by management. Employee share options are cancelled or changed. Turnover is extremely high.

    Advice to Management

Being more sensitive to the needs of employees to learn, grow and advance would help with employee retention and job satisfaction.

    Pros

    - Opportunity to work on innovative technology in database, directories and artificial intelligence.
    - Intelligent diverse and friendly people
    - Small company, many opportunities for growth, good choice of projects you want to work on

    Cons

    - Can get better compensation working for a large company or in Silicon Valley
    - Fast paced hard working environment, not for everyone

    Advice to Management

The company will need to get more organized as it grows. Pay more attention to the quality of the code versus how fast it is produced.
