    Pros

There is potential to advance your career to maybe store manager. If you are good at sales, there is potential to make extra money from commission. Some of the store managers are nice to work with. Probably a good place to start as a first job while in school.

    Cons

Its retail. The base pay is very low. You need to push certain items in the store in order to get a commission. This can annoy customers. When I was trained, I was told to encourage customers to look at cell phone plans, even when they are not there for that. It seems that only expensive items that few people want will give a decent commission. Most customers come in looking for a small items that they could not find else where. People who want to buy the larger or expensive items might stop by to look, but then buy it somewhere else.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase the base pay. Try to keep prices of electronics competive with other stores that you are loosing business to. (Walmart, Target, Amazon)

    Pros

There is a lot to learn, and you're always up to date on the latest electronics. I found myself growing to love the team I was working with at the store I was, and my store manager had an excellent work ethic. We were happy to work as a team.

    Cons

Regional management seemed to have no idea what working at a store was actually like, we were pushed hard to sell cellphones as if everyone that walked in wanted a new cellphone. Radioshack is not the kind of store that should pay based on commissions, many times I felt more like a used car salesman than a Radioshack employee. My pay was always half a week late at least.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Regional management needs to have more of an understanding of what the frontline is like, instead of keeping us under the threat of being fired every time they inspect a store.

    Pros

Good benefits, pay is just O.K.

    Cons

Middle management no longer cares about or listens to the employees in the stores. Experienced employees are what made RS but they forgot that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go after some of the employees that made you a household name. Put some money back in to commissions for true sales people.

    Pros

Not usually stressful unless it's the holiday season, your staff eventually feel like family, if your store has the volume, you have the potential to earn quite a bit of commission, and the workload is typically not too heavy.

    Cons

If your store location doesn't have the volume, you'll depend entirely upon hourly pay, which isn't where it should be for the amount of knowledge and skills that we're expected to retain. It's difficult to earn vacation hours, since they are proportional to your sales. It's somewhat difficult to achieve advancement of any kind, unless your location has the positions open. You'll likely end up working a Full Time schedule but still be considered Part Time, so you won't receive any benefits, etc.

Former Employee - Radioshack Store Manager in Millington, TN

    Pros

This has been a fun and rewarding job. While sometimes upper management and corporate policies could be annoying, redundant, or out of touch; the overall atmosphere was fun and family like. My employees were truly great. I enjoyed helping them develop while developing into a stronger leader and better salesperson all the time myself. The benefits were pretty good, and time off was usually not a problem if requested in advance.

    Cons

Sometimes corporate policies were out of touch with reality in the store. Sometimes a good concept that does not translate well to reality is worse than winging it. Too many metrics were being tracked, but I have heard that this issue has been corrected.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give a little more control of the store environment to the actual managers who are working there everyday. If your district managers do their job well, there should not be a store manager that you can't trust to make good decisions on their own.
