I worked at Rain Bird full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    - Opportunity to learn and have a job
    - Contribute on different fronts
    - Cooperative floor personnel
    - Decent pay if in Tucson (would advice against relocation)

    Cons

    Where should I start
    - Complete circus with multiple ringmasters trying to move the company in different directions
    - Company objectives change every 6 months (or sometimes after every Strap Plan Meeting)
    - Too many chiefs and not enough Indians
    - Layoffs/Resignations every quarter
    - People demoted and moved around into divisions that they have no clue about
    - Clueless managers running the divisions

I have stopped giving free advice since no one wants to hear it. They would rather pay for it.

I worked at Rain Bird full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Friendly co- workers all with horror stories regarding upper management. Lots of rumors and interesting stories.

    Cons

After moving on a couple of years ago, I really do shudder as the title states. There is a very abnormal, unhealthy culture at Rain Bird; One that you will never experience again in your career. Management seems to think they are moving the needle when in actuality, the company clearly struggles with identity in the marketplace. Sales are declining. They are not an industry leader. Innovation comes from competitors. Arrogance is a distinct trade mark of the organization in the market.
As you examine your career, steer clear. Look at the market if you are new to it. Talk to competitors, distributors, former employees. You will gain a very clear picture of Rain Bird. It is not a positive picture of growth and collaboration. It is a culture of being second guessed, questioned and drilled down.
The irony of the situation is the customer base consists of very simple people. It is not a challenging market to sell into. The end users buy from distributors they are friendly with and they buy based on product familiarity not feature sets that develop in the industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To the owner: Read the comments in the Cons section. It is time to sell and move on. The company is stagnated and going no where. New vibrant creative ownership is needed. It is the next step for Rain Bird Corporation.

    Pros

Brand still has credibility in retail market; however, brand losing acceptance among commercial customers.

    Cons

Left RB a couple of years ago. Recently invited to return. After two rounds of conversations, it was clear that leadership is still out of touch with reality. Smart talented individuals still are seen as threats to the man at the top and his cadre of so called leaders.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sell the company while you still have something worth buying. There is no hope for RB's leadership team

I have been working at Rain Bird full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great Co-Workers. A lot of very talented people to work with, A good place to meet contacts that you will need when you get cut

    Cons

Poor management. Ranking system is outdated and creates a very high turnover and poor moral. If you like a job that you always wonder everyday you go to work is it going to be your last, then Rain Bird is the company for you.

It was an excellent company many years ago, but sadly those days are gone.

Get a new management team and stop the reign of fear

I worked at Rain Bird as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

None that I can think of at this moment, except for the fact I don't work there anymore!

    Cons

That as a woman rather full or temp, in this company you have no voice to what is going on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need more women in the Management position!

I worked at Rain Bird full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

its a job for now, good for networking the next job, and how to appreciate a good job.

    Cons

senior management does not use its resources to their full abilities, there are alot of well qualified employees at all the facilities, but they will let those valued employees go and keep the non hacks and rift raft.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a grasp on the present, the past is the past. move on... there is alot of animosity towards management at key production plants .. would really suck for you too loose all your top notch operations people all at once.....

I have been working at Rain Bird full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good benefits and compensation.

Flexible work hours and personal time.

Opportunity to design commercial products from concept to customer.

Many very good engineers on the team.

Have read several complaints about succession planning causing problems. I've never experienced ANY pressure to release a team member because they didn't pan out as a manager. Corporate guidelines SPECIFICALLY provide recognition and advancement separate from "management" so I'd strongly resist any pressure if it came. Technical, non-mangement positions up to principal scientist are available (and really exist in the building).

Strong emphasis on quality. Willingness to sacrifice budget for schedule.

Opportunity to visit customers, understand needs and wants, design products to fit.

    Cons

Employees are "ranked" against other group members which increases competition.

Communication between business areas can be difficult. Concerted effort is needed to break "silos".

Production distributed across several facilities in multiple countries can increase effort during release of new products.

Vacation benefit based on *Rain Bird service*, rather than previous job benefits. If you presently get 5 weeks of vacation, RB does not match when you join.
