    Unnecessarily stressful work environment

    Product Manager (Former Employee)
    San Diego, CA

ProsExceptional people for the most part. Leading manufacturer of irrigation equipment so the opportunities to learn are fantastic.

ConsWork environment is the worst I have ever experienced. The sad part is it does not have to be. Most employees are exceptional in what they do and left alone could be extremely productive. Management sees things differently however and seems to believe they must force productivity through intimidation.

Advice to Senior ManagementBack off. You presumably hire high quality people for a reason. Respect their opinions, give them the opportunity to try things - even if they fail occasionally.

Stop being so secretive. When high-level decisions are made about the direction the company is going, communicate it to the employees to get their buy-in. Things will run more smoothly if everyone is working together.

Abandon the incentive-type bonus structure and replace it with a profit-sharing plan. The organization is not structured properly to create sensible year-long incentive plans so that sort of bonus simply frustrates employees and results in unnecessary interdepartmental conflict. A profit-sharing plan will encourage everyone to work toward the common goal of increasing profit.

Expect to work long hours under a hostile environment

    Senior Project Engineer (Current Employee)
    San Diego, CA

ProsDecent pay with subpar benefits. You work with talented people until they are gone.

ConsOutdated forced ranking puts good people on corrective action process, even if they don't deserve it. This system does not foster team work. You are under gestapo scrutiny all the time and there is a lot of hostility. HR is horrible.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is no real management as they just follow orders coming from the owner, who is becoming more paranoid every day.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

To survive at Rain Bird you need to work more and complain less

    Senior Project Engineer (Current Employee)
    San Diego, CA

ProsIt is a good salary, pays the bills. If you are honest and keep working hard you will survive. I don't think everything is bad with Rain Bird. Acknowledge goals are hard to reach, but such is life. You better work hard and complain less

ConsSenior Management is not really looking for our opinion, most of top directives are at conflict with each other, there is little cooperation between working groups

Advice to Senior ManagementThere are a lot of good people with very good experience, should listen to them. Post mortem reviews could give good hints to others following...

Steer clear of Rain Bird if you are searching for career growth opportunities!

    Engineering Group Manager (Former Employee)
    San Diego, CA

ProsCo-workers in general are great people ---- lots of teamwork among the engineers.

ConsAll the reasons posted in other reviews are relevant here! "Accountability Without Authority" should be the company slogan. Employee empowerment is non-existent. The bonus structure is intentionally rigged to guarantee that an employee cannot meet their goals that would trigger actually receiving a bonus. Most of the manufacturing is done in Mexico, and engineers are expected to spend lots of time down at the plants there making sure that production is actually taking place. There is no such thing as a "Production Engineer" at Rain Bird ---- it is expected that a design engineer will manage the production team.

Advice to Senior ManagementFeedback is futile ---- Senior Management is not interested in feedback. They are only interested in making sure they are not targeted for execution by Tony LaFetra.

Lots of turnover, many jobs moving to Mexico

    Engineer (Current Employee)
    San Diego, CA

ProsPretty good salary, good employees, good benefits

ConsMany people come and go frequently, not many long term career opportunities. Most of the manufacturing, customer service, engineering and accounting departments are moving to Mexico or even China or India.

Advice to Senior ManagementTrust the good employees your hire for information on the market

Rain Bird is not an easy company to work for, but rewards results.

    Product Manager (Former Employee)
    San Diego, CA

ProsProvides a challenging work environment; i.e., proving yourself by delivering results can lead to other opportunites within Rain Bird and other companies. People who leave Rain Bird do well in the irrigation industry and elsewhere.
Rain Bird is the leader in its industry and manufactures products that can benefit the planet.
Rain Bird hires a lot of top notch talent.
    Salaries seem to be competitive.

    ConsPeriodic downsizing cycles.
Securing the resources to accomplish results can be a challenge.
Different divisions of the company at times seem to work at odds against each other.
Amenities can be lean - most, but not all, mid-level employees have offices

Advice to Senior ManagementTake more of a strategic view in making business decisions.

Rain Bird is a terrible place to work. It will be much better once Tony LaFetra makes his last move.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    San Diego, CA

ProsThere are very smart people at Rain Bird. Some pockets are well run. Rain Bird also pays very well.

ConsIt is currently like Rain Bird does not know what it wants. They are unwilling to invest in product developments that are necessary to maintain competitiveness in an increasingly competetive industry.

Advice to Senior ManagementCommunicate openly with employees. Let them know what the vision is for Rain Bird. There is NO honest communication along those lines. But that is not surprizing considering the owner is in his seventies and probably is actively trying to unload the company.

I cannot recommend Rain Bird to anyone.

    Product Manager (Former Employee)
    San Diego, CA

ProsBenefits were OK and in general, the non-management people were good people. Otherwise, there is not much to talk about.

ConsPoor management, no direction, very satisfied with the status quo, placed no value in employees below the director level. Too focused on policies and procedures to the point of absurdity. Mandates would come down from upper management with no explanation, and make absolutely no sense. I honestly do not know how the command such a high market share.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat people with respect, empower your employees, take some risks. Involve your employees in decisions instead of making them in a bubble. Stop the non-sense of ridiculous policies and procedures that hamper any type of innovation.
