Pros
The culture and coworkers are all really nice -- it's a positive experience
Cons
It is a fairly small company so not a lot of of positions and room for advancement. Also, due to size, resources and support are limited.
Advice to Senior Management
Management, processes and profitability have improved tremendously in the past couple years. It's good to see the direction of the company really taking shape. The company could benefit by continuing to streamline processes and systems to become before efficient, as well as further organization and better project/product management within departments.
Pros
Aside from receiving the road atlas at a discount no good reason
Cons
Unstability, lack of recognition of employee's hard work
Advice to Senior Management
Start listening to the people who helped make the company the great company it used to be
Pros
Rand McNally offers a good work environment in the engineering department. With some exceptions, managers are good communicator and listeners. There is opportunity to be exposed to a large variety of technologies.
Cons
There is no opportunity to grow within the company. The compensations are a bit lower than other companies and there is no significant merit increase. The lack of long term vision is been their worse enemy for the last 5 years.
Advice to Senior Management
Some managers really need to change their style. Less micromanagement and more trusting their team. Senior management can benefits from making informed decisions.
Pros
Decent money easy work for pay
Cons
Now owned by investment company. Slowly laying off management
Advice to Senior Management
Good luck, not sure if Rand McNally will be more than an internet company in a few years
Pros
Great colleagues to work with in the Irvine office, middle management is respectful and reasonably competent. Satisfaction of getting good quality work done is high.
Cons
Senior management has been historically poor in that there has been very little long term strategic vision for aligning the company in such a way to capitalize on emerging technologies, and change in a way to survive in a changing world.
Advice to Senior Management
Invest in future technologies, perform research to find out where the industry will be in 5, 10, 15 years to allow strategic investment in those areas to allow you to become relevant in the future. It is not enough to react to trends and half-heartedly try to jump in those waters at the last moment and ride the waves of market leaders who have been building and investing in that future for years.
Pros
The best reason to work for Rand is the recognizable brand name. If you are lucky enough to work on a team with a positive manager, you may see some opportunities for professional growth. Rand is a small company and therefore you really need to roll up your sleeves and work in areas that may not be within your core competency. Although challenging, you really get a chance to grow.
Cons
The company has not figured out who it wants to be or how it will stay relevant. And without that, how can it thrive? Projects are started and stopped without communication to the rest of the employees that they are no longer a priority. The worst part about working here is that there is a negativity that pervades everything. The employees are so beaten down because management continually takes without giving anything back. This company is in financial trouble. I would proceed with caution.
Advice to Senior Management
Every great company knows that it's employees are its biggest asset. Without happy, or at least neutral employees, you can be nothing.
