I worked at Raytheon BBN Technologies as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The biggest "pro" is knowledgable co-workers who are willing to help if you just ask. The nature of the work can be challenging, so there are always opportunities to learn. The work is engaging if you already have a solid computer programming background (Matlab is a MUST for this workplace). Perks include flexible hours and an individual office.

    Cons

It's easy to get overwhelmed when you are put onto multiple projects. Expect to spend extra time outside of work learning things outside your area of expertise (this may be a pro for some people). When the economy is bad, the company's bottom line suffers because it handles a lot of government contracts. That obviously has an impact on the quantity of projects and hiring practices. Upward movement seems pretty stagnant. It seems like people get to a position they like (or are extremely good at) and end up staying there as long as possible-- sometimes by choice, sometimes because they've been pigeon-holed.

    Cons

Most of what is classified is the fact that the work is a waste of taxpayer money
    Arrogant and Dishonest leadership
If you don't have a PHD you might as well be dead

I have been working at Raytheon BBN Technologies

    Pros

    - Flexibility
    - Pay is fair.
    - Benefits are good.
    - Growth is great if you bring in work (or know someone who does). Not so great if you don't.
    - Values scholarly work, but values money more.

    Cons

    - Will discreetly layoff employees
    - Good ole boy network
    - Very cliquish environment. Either you are in, or you are out.
    - Won't tell you that your job is in jeopardy.
    - Managers practice unfair or deceitful acts to eliminate employees who are lightly billable, or who are perceived unfavorably.
    - People who bring in work basically control the destiny (or fate) of those who don't.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit living in an alternate reality, and kidding yourself. BBN is just like every other beltway bandit.

    Pros

The people: Innovative, creative, vibrant. Lots of ways to connect with fellow employees both formally and informally. Easy place to create a network and see where it may lead.

    Cons

Stagnant approach to business. Management is stuck in the rut of what worked 20 years ago must work now. On the employee side, too many are happy with what they used to do. Add to that the fact that 'Cambridge is the Center of the Universe' to those who work at the Center of the Universe.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You better get past the 'There is BBN and then there is Raytheon' mentality real soon. You are now part of a huge conglomerate. Period.
