    Engineering

Systems Engineer (Former Employee) Largo, FL

ProsExcellent place to grow and enhance your skills, senior engineers willing to mentor, ability to work different projects, company is very team oriented.

ConsDepending on the site, no work/life balance, no clear plan to bring in new business, very focused on DOD contracts, heavily loaded with upper management.

    Was a great technology company.

Senior Manager (Current Employee) Largo, FL

    ProsGreat engineering staff in place.

ConsBecame driven by market, and did not invest in future capabilities.
Job became frustrating and personnel became dis-enfranchised.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet back to your engineering roots, invest in future products and capabilities, and practice what is preached (ethics and values).

It was a nice place to work.

    Assembler (Former Employee) Largo, FL

ProsGood benefits, some nice people to work for and helpful. All the jobs (areas) are really easy and the instructions on how to build something are very simple to follow. The Engineers are very good at helping out when there is a problem.

ConsManagement love gossip - from the floor supervisors to the department managers. Hourly people will make up stories about other employees and go spread rumors. The Union there (UAW) really stick by their own people and create problems for non-union people. It's a cut-throat place to work - you need a suit of armor to work there.

Advice to Senior ManagementJust do their job and don't listen to the B.S. on the floor with the employees. Just get the job done and correctly.

    Big Company

IT Architect (Current Employee) Largo, FL

ProsFlexible work schedules. Telecommuting, 9/80 alternate schedule,
    Lots of opportunity.
Internal functional groups and external program facing groups tend to be very separate but there are opportunities in both.

ConsIn a downturn for the last few years, cutting employees regularly.
Very hard to get promotions...but easy to get increases in responsibility.
Functional groups are very distributed, so your manager is likely to be in a different state, making you balance between supporting local priorities or your management priorities.
    IT is highly outsourced.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Very good place to work as long as you can tolerate the big company environment

Senior Manager (Former Employee) Largo, FL

ProsSalary structure is very competitive. You can make things happen despite red tape.

ConsBig company with big company politics and approval processes.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide goals and allow the many competent people to do their job. There are multiple levels of approval each justifying their existence thereby setting up redundant and less specific contributions of management.

Work was an interesting, often challenging, collaborative effort with friends.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Largo, FL

ProsManagement frequently recognizes good and hard work with praise and giftcards.
Management does not interfere with employee's planned time off, even when it is inconvenient for the project.
Management always treats the employee with respect.
Management encourages employees to ask for help early if it was needed.
Co-workers eagerly share knowledge, finding time to lend expertise.
Raytheon encourages its worker to work the 9/80 schedule, giving the employee every other Friday off.
Raytheon closes the week between Christmas and New Years day, adding up to days off with pay without using Paid Time Off.
    Raytheon has great benefits

ConsRaytheon should provide training for estimating "Lines of Code" for software bids. When the estimation is performed poorly, the company can be faced with an impossible schedule or failure to get the contract due to over-estimated effort.

Overall, a very good company and a great experience.

Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee) Largo, FL

ProsThe people are technically excellent and are easy to work with. The pay and benefits are competitive and there is usually interesting and challenging work to do. 9/80 (every other Friday off) schedule and flexible work hours support the “Work Life Balance” that they promote.

ConsWhile Raytheon is a great company, their Florida staff is Top Heavy, leaving little room for career advancement. They have been reducing their overall staff for several years now, while still bringing in new grads. They have not won any new business in quite some time.

Advice to Senior ManagementAdopt more streamlined processes over current expensive ones (CMMI).

    Good, Professional Environment

Senior Software Engineer II (Former Employee) Largo, FL

ProsBenefits outstanding. Co-workers were very bright, competent, intelligent people. Work schedules generally were fair. Managers generally communicated well with employees.

ConsI lot of the work was legacy sustaining work. Old Technology. Resistance to try new things, technologies. Opportunity for advancement very limited.

Advice to Senior ManagementBetter decision making regarding new ventures. It would seem our business "hunters" were never reprimanded for their inability to win new work.

Raytheon not a good place for technical people or hard workers.

Senior Software II (Current Employee) Largo, FL

    Prosflexible work schedule
Ability to switch projects at a moments notice, when the business is there.

Cons20 managers to every 1 worker.

Non value added people steal ideas all the time to pass as their own.

It takes 10 times the budget to do a task because you have to feed management and there processes / gates that saturates budgets.

Technical work or doing the right thing is never a priority. The only thing that is emphasized is management schedules, and forecasts.

It’s amazing that this company stays competitive with all of the overhead and non value added people that are shoved on to programs to increase profit.

Advice to Senior ManagementRestructure to become more lean at the top and middle, and penetrate markets that are outside of the Raytheon comfort zone. Don't be afraid to take on the technical sustainment work. That's what keeps the customer married to the company over the long term, and promotes follow on business.

Raytheon is a decent place to work

Senior Principal Engineer (Current Employee) Largo, FL

    ProsGood benefits
Wide variety of jobs for mobile professional
    Good network for information sharing
    Well-defined processes

ConsPrimarily US defense work; expect budget cuts and fewer contracts
Training is hit or miss, depending on overhead budget situation
Management tends to be overly optimistic; doesn't share bad news

Advice to Senior ManagementDiversify so not so dependent on defense work
    Invest in training for all
Give both the good and the bad news
