Former Employee – worked at Red Cross full-time for more than a year
Pros – Name recognition looks good on a resume. Feel a sense of purpose. Good benefits, pay is average for health and human services.
Cons – Chapters can get swallowed up, lack of leadership, people in positions of authority have either no motivation or no desire to do their job. No job security. Beyond poor management at the local levels.
Advice to Senior Management – Get with it and recognize employee contributions and allow them to do their job.

Former Employee – worked at Red Cross full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – Company has been through its ups and downs throughout the years. Overall it was good to me and I received great training there when they offered it. Its challenges now are trying to gain market share again and donor retention. The benefits were always excellent and the pay regardless what some employees thought, were competitive. Raises were given when other companies were freezing wages. Even when our raises were on hold, a flat bonus was given in lieu of an increase to recognize worker's accomplishments. I am grateful that I worked there for a cumulative of 22 years before a final layoff. No regrets.
Cons – Financial troubles have hit this organization big time with numerous layoffs over the past 2 years and more to come. The Dedham location is practically nonexistent and the morale is like working at a morgue. Management really needs to think things through before rolling out systems that cause layoffs, only to find out the system is not adequate. Need to pilot programs first before finalizing implementation. Hire people based on their actual experience, talent, personality and intelligence. Stay away from the continued "old boy/old girl" model that plaques that environment with incompetent decision makers. The company is a foundation worth saving and deserves to live on.
Advice to Senior Management – Stop looking through rose colored glasses; listen to the people and their concerns.

Former Employee – worked at Red Cross full-time for more than a year
Pros – Non-Profit Environment provides a sense of worth to achievements.
The identity and branding of the company is well known throughout the world
The services provided were top-notch.
Cons – Communications were lacking, both in rolling out new information and in response to feedback.
Technological advances were poorly structured and faulty on roll-out.
Advice to Senior Management – Get to understand the actual functions and operations of the company prior to trying to implement the newest thing for the industry. Otherwise you are trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

Former Employee – worked at Red Cross full-time for more than a year
Pros – Services really go to the disadvantaged. Non-profit organization. Blood products help patients in need, Emergency services really help victims and this is very noble.
Cons – LOW PAY, No empowerment between line staff and management. Pay should reflect skill of position. Red Cross promotions are hard to come by and they dont reward top talent.
Advice to Senior Management – Listen to employees. They work the front line. Management needs to realign priorities and focus on employee development. Good people want to work at the American Red Cross, but retention is very low because of people need good pay to live

Current Employee – been working at Red Cross full-time for less than a year
Pros – This organization is rewarding and has a favorable working environment. Health and dental coverage is great and can be effective first day on the job if elected. After 3 months of employment, eligible for 401K savings, matched at 4%.
Cons – As a former Accounting/Office Manager with 30+ years work experience and 2 years of college, for me, the salary is below average for my experience. After being unemployed for almost a year, I accepted my first hourly paid position at a reduction in salary of $10,000 annually.
Advice to Senior Management – Due to budgetary restraints at the regional level, non-exempt hourly salaries are below the local and national average and could use a 10% pay increase.
