Desperation, Thy Name is Red Lobster

Kitchen Prep (Former Employee)
Syracuse, NY

I worked at Red Lobster full-time for more than a year

ProsThe location I worked at was close to my house, the parking was OK, the waitresses were good looking and the work isn't very difficult to do.

ConsThe hours are awful, the culture is unbelievably petty, the management has an almost scary INGSOC mentality, the pay is absolutely awful and they expect you to stay overtime without paying you overtime. Also, they stalk you online. This isn't conspiracy talk, this is actually something they make very clear to you. If you work for Darden, you need to be sure your social profiles are set to very strict privacy settings.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet over yourselves.

Horrible place to work

Server (Former Employee)
Palm Desert, CA

I worked at Red Lobster full-time for less than a year

ProsI had the opportunity to meet a lot of really cool people.

ConsUpper management would micro manage their store managers. Most were not very qualified to run a restaurant and it seemed there was no coaching for them. It was all about the numbers and doing whatever it took to make sure the guest had nothing negative to say, even if it meant buying their entire check for the slightest complaint. And there were many complaints! Food was disgusting. They bragged about how they could cook a live lobster in less than 7 minutes with all of their microwaves, but the food still took 45 minutes for a complete order. Poorly run restaurant.

Advice to Senior ManagementI would look a little harder at your hiring/promoting practices for who you select to run your restaurants. Get the microwaves out of the kitchen and get to cooking.

Worst job ever

Bartender (Former Employee)
Williamsville, NY

I worked at Red Lobster part-time for less than a year

ProsCustomers were nice. The Darden company sounded like a good company to work for, too bad the people running this place don't have a clue how to be good managers and treat people with respect.

ConsManagement was nasty, bad training. I have never been treated so bad at a job as I was at the location on Transit road in Williamsville NY

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn some people skills and how to treat your employees.

horrible experience

Server (Former Employee)
City of Industry, CA

I worked at Red Lobster part-time for less than a year

Pros-free biscuits
-50% food while working (even though it is still expensive)
-25% off at all Darden restaurants

Cons-makes servers start out as service assistants even if they have serving experience
-eliminated busboys/food runner position to save money (makes S.A. do everything)
-managers promised promotion to server from S.A. within 1month(took 4 months)
-after passing S.A. test, scheduled server training for TWO hours a WEEK
-over hires so everybody gets very few hours
-grossly overestimated amount of tips servers earn during interview
-push you to sell add-ons
-gave me an old menu book to study, when many portion sizes and items were different or no longer on the menu
-spent more time doing sidework than actually serving
-staff was not friendly towards new employees
-only allowed a three table section
-constantly had new promotions, and did not inform staff, i would find out about new promos through the Red Lobster mailing list
-older servers often look down upon new employees
-very specific dress shirt (button on collar, one pocket, specific material)
-when training, I was given no guidance whatsoever (given a menu to memorize and that's it)
-very strict (even though its supposed to be a "casual" dining concept)
-made you tip out alley coordinators
-alley coordinators would stop you, even if you were busy, to have your run other peoples food (because SA's were too busy bussing tables to run food)

Overall, It was an absolute nightmare working for Red Lobster. NEVER accept a job as server assistant if you have previous serving experience. I would not recommend working for this restaurant to anyone.

Advice to Senior Managementdon't be cheap and hire busboys, server assistants already have too much to do!

Red Lobster and Darden Doesn't Care about You the Crew!

Manager (Former Employee)
Akron, OH

I worked at Red Lobster full-time for more than 8 years

ProsMoney can be good if you bust your butt.

ConsManagement runs around like a chicken with head cut off. Managers lie to cover their butts. Gms lie to cover the managers butts. Directors lie too, they all lie to cover their corperate a$$. Darden says they a great company to work for. Go work a month in any of your Red Lobstes and see how great they feel.

Advice to Senior ManagementDont forget what its like to be at the bottom. We are why you make the money you do.
